Man!!! I knew things were gonna be different this year.....
but our county raised the sales tax rate to a whopping 8.125% in order to fund a new hospital.....and they haven't even yet found where they are gonna put it.
What is your sales tax rate where you are?
It's gotta be better than this!!

I feel almost embarrassed to say this, but Oregon does not have a sales tax. We have about the highest personal income tax of any state however.

I guess I'm here to make you all feel better about your burden because our sales tax in Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada is 7%provincial sales tax (pst) and 7% Goods and services tax (gst) for a combined 17% - add that to the current value of our dollar which is less than half that of the U.S. dollar! Now how do you feel?

Barry C..As Mike L mentioned 7+7 is only 14
Here in Ontario it is 8% provincial tax plus 7% federal GST tax. That makes out purchases cost 15% extra.
Also Barry C.... The last ime I looked our dollar is worth around 66% of the U.S. dollar..not "less than 50%" AND that is GREAT if you can get some U.S. customers!

My state is known as Taxachusetts with a n income tax up around 18% and a sales tax of 5% add in property taxes and exsise taxes. Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaak!!! And to think New Hampshire is a few minutes away and has a slogan " live free or die" they don't have hardly any taxes. People started moving up there and working down here. Mass makes you pay taxes here. Insurance and liscense are cheaper up there too.

Well here in Michigan its 6%. Not too long ago we were at 4%. Lawmakers wanted more money for schools. They did a nice job duping the general population into beliving that a 2% hike in sales tax and a property tax reduction would save us money as all the tourists would be helping fund education. It doesn't take a math whiz to figure that the lousy $200 my property tax was reduced would be more than made up by the 2% sales tax increase. Buy only $5000 worth of goods in a year and its break even. Buy a vehicle we're really in the hole.

Hehe.. I love this number, only cause it seems so random...
7.253%
This is Arizona's 5% tax plus Lake Havasu City AND Mohave County's taxes.. THey're nice enough to put it all on one form and let ya pay one organization, then they divide it up accordingly.

Everything except for enough to shop at the flea markets and eat Kraft dinner. That is 15% HST and an income tax rate that keeps rising. In fact, it is bloody embarassing.

7+7 can equal 15 (almost) if one tax is charged on top of the other, as is often the case with Provincial tax charged on top of GST. If the item is 1.00 it becomes 1.15 after tax (and rounding up 1.145).
Our sales tax is 15%...definitely high enough to feel it at the cash register!

7.25% here in Nevada. HEY! I thought the gambling industry was supposed to pay for everything- to make up for the crime, alcholoism and general all around sin!
We don't have a personal income tax or corporate tax though. But we do have lots of other fees, permits and taxes that I suspect make up for it.
Do you have "use tax"? If I buy a router or a computer, etc. out of state I have to pay Nevada sales tax on it! It's to punish me for not buying from a fellow Nevada businessman. Fine, but it doesn't matter if the product isn't even available in Nevada! I don't think the state cares so much about us businessmen as it does about tax revenue.

In the sixties we had 9 %sales tax It was changed to 12 % Added Value Tax. That means that instead of a 9 % tax the last seller schould add on the final consumer`s bill, we got a VAT system were all sellers adds 12% BUT the next one handling the goods are allowed to withdraw this from the 12 % tax he chashes in on behalf of the sTATE.Final customer not running a biz must pay it all but cant withdraw anything. So it taxes the Added Value We put in to what we sell. State got them self a costly taxation system, BUT the biznizzes is paying the cost( bookkeeping, etc) so for the state is very profitable.
By the way it first changed to 15%, then to 18 then to 20 then to 23 and now it is 24 % ;(

When it was 5. something, the issue of a state lottery was up on the ballot. They PROMISED a great deal of the money would go to schools. That was about 12 years ago. In my town it is 6.25% now and our schools are on the "watch" list; some of the lowest test scores in the country. It's seven mill tonight, and what will our schools get of just one week's worth? Maybe 10 cents! 6.25% in parts of Ohio.
