I'm not Mr. Manners, I screw up daily in the fine art of social skills and I'm probably making another SNAFU right here but its something that I'm sure a lot of you have thought about.
What I feel would be a great benefit for the overall use of this BB (and others) is to only post the LINKS to images here in this forum or put them in the Portfolio Forum where you expect to wait while images load.
How many times have we all clicked on a topic and had to wait 3-4 minutes for someones 'not-ready-for-web-site' images to load, and load and load? It's a pain in the butt for those of us in the rural areas with slow connections over outdated phone lines. (We may get cable modems by years end, I hope!!!)
I'm not prudish and was not offended by the pics of old Odd Nerdrum, maybe a little surprised but thats what art it supposed to do for you. 99% of the controversy on Odd would have been eliminated and some of the more delicate eyes would not have been insulted had there been only a link to the pic plus a lot of bandwidth saved in the process. I'm not against controversial subject matter, I feel its a part of growing and learning, Nerdrum is a fine artist even if his egotistical portrait was shocking to a few (it did load quite fast) but by the time it got 'support images' and 'support images for the support images' the whole topic lost its original meaning and we ended up insulted and wasting time.
If I want to view your images, then link 'em to a site somewhere so we can go 'there' to see your latest masterpiece or your Uncle Bubba's new bass boat or whatever you deem to be a 'must-see'.
Kinda like visiting Aunt Ethel and having to watch home movies of her cousin's brother-in-law's step-children on a trip to the zoo (the animals were the only thing of interest).

I'll agree. It's no big deal to post a link, if only in deference to those folks who may have youngsters visiting us. Type all of the hype you want to, state your passion and then provide a link. Why not?

Sounds like a pretty good solution. Off-topic posts add interest and variety to the site, but there is a time and a place for everything. I think Letterville should be a family oriented site, and, in that context, mainstreaming controversial art in a post is just not the appropriate thing to do.

If I read Larry right, the problem is download time, not subject matter. Quantity, not quality.
I didn't know about this when I first got online. I noticed it was easy to put pictures into e-mail. The Illustrated Letter is here! Neat!
Fortunately, a sympathetic professor taught me about bitmap compression, file size, download time and bandwidth. In other words, if you hog people's mailboxes, they're not going to like your purty pichers very much.

No...........It's content too. Our kids DO read our board. A link for controversial nudity is only reasonable but polite and considerate too. If this were a forum limited to analytical adults only, then it wouldn't matter. I had no problem with the painting, but I can certainly see that others with younger aspiring signers would have a problem. I disagree with you, Mr. Shortreed.

God forbid, Larry, that anyone would be considered a prude. In this day and age the worst of sins. Probably a link is a good idea for those with slow modems though. By the way, since when is it art's main function to surprise, or for that matter shock. Only in the last 150 years or so has the public been fooled into believing that. Hell who can be surprised by anything anymore? After the 20th century's offerings in art and music, I am not surprised or shocked by anything anymore. Disgusted maybe.

Posting pics certainly has a lot issues with it.
Yes, the quality does matter. The "good taste" definition has been tested to the gills.
Scrolling down to read the posts is a given...but this back and forth gig because someone put a pic in that is wider than a car tire is giving some of us migraines.
The time waiting on a thread to load is ridiculous as well.
Again, in Henry's defense, I had to right click to get a menu that offered "Show Picture" as an option...but no more work than clicking on a link...ok...one more click..big whoop. I do agree that a link would be more appropriate.
It doesn't matter what the content is, we are in a high-stress profession, and "reacting" to something we can find fault with seems to more common place than "responding" by keeping the original question/issue in mind and thinking about our response.
...Trying to keep an open mind on an open forum...

"Big Whoop"!?!? Amazing! I thought my daughter was the only one who ever said that!
