If you remember 10 - 15 years ago when all the low tack tape was bad and all you could get was the bad stuff because 3M stopped making it and everybody that had a stock of it on their shelves wanted to get rid of it - I think a lot of people went to using high tack, or the green stuff, or the blue, or regular Scotch #810 in 1/2" or 3/4" widths.
If you want it in 1/4" wide the only place I know of is;

Pacific Coast Paint
304 S.E. 28th Ave.
Portland, Oregon
(503) 232 - 8535
It's a little mom & pop paint store. I tried for years to get somebody down here to carry the stuff, but talking to 3M is like talking to the FBI, they deny the existence of the stuff. So nobody else, to my knowledge, has it. The stock # on the box is 07373-1, it comes 3 rolls to the box. I ordered 6 rolls recently and with C.O.D. charge it came to $24.76
I use it all the time, it's great, between low and high tacks and costs a lot less this way than buying 3/4" at stationery stores.

WOW - I do something that the big boys do!!

I have about 4 rolls left since I ordered my dozen. LOVE the stuff.

What's really cool about it is that you can leave it on overnight, on those letters you get to recoat the next day.

Mike,
Is this like the old #682? I've never liked that green stuff that's so thick it feels like driving over the curb.

Whutz a 682?

I'm guessing it was "Low Tack".

This is the same identical stuff as the Scotch "invisible" tape - kinda frosty looking 'til you stick it down. Sticks a little better than the old low tack but not nearly as aggressive as High Tack, lays down real nice and smooth, does not create Bodoni serifs like the Green Mamba. Too strong to use on sho cards, but good for trucks, painted surfaces, windows - gee, the sun never sets on this stuff. You can buy as little as three rolls at a time.

I tried to get the local brush man, Montroy, and McLogan's to stock the stuff and they all ran into the same block wall with 3M that I did, they claim not to make it - it's that old Abbott & Costello routine, ya know?
"Who's the guy in the Tape Department?"
"Yes, he is"
"I wanna know what's the guys name".
"No, What's the guy's name in Adhesives".
"I don't care who's in Adhesives".
"Who's not in Adhesives, who's in Tape".
"I don't know".
"Oh, he's in Scotchlite".
"Who is?"
"No - I don't know."

It's as bad as trying to work with the City of Pasadena! But buying from Pacific Coast works.

With regard to tape, I use the 1/4" type that they use in supermarkets for sealing plastic bags. They have a device that you insert the bag into, and the tape seals the bag & contents, and cuts off the tape . The tape is a coloured vinyl material...comes in several colour variations, and has a medium tack adhesive that I suspect is acrylic based. This tape is thin enough, and has a degree of flexibility to it, so you can use it to mask curved lines. It holds a clean, sharp edge when used with 1-shot. Cannot be allowed to get wet however, as this will soften the adhesive, and cause the tape to lift.Costs about 1/3 of what the 3M stuff sells for but does a very acceptable job.

Some sign supply places here in Canada sell this as "signwriters' tape"
