I am using Pelucid (POR-15)as a great UV topcoat. But, it is only a gloss finish. Now, I have to "dress down" some carved work to a matte or semi-gloss finish so it won't look so "plastic" looking. I have contacted the POR-15 techreps personally and all they come up with is "there is a matte addative" made by DuPont but, they don't know the type or part number.... Has anyone SUCCESSFULLY used this product with GOOD results ???

John..I have used the "flatting agent" that Dupont makes in their paints, including enamels and urethanes. It is sort of a chalky material suspended in some sort of liquid carrier. It works well for the purpose it was intended.
The only problem I ever had was during a restoration project on a 57 chevy. The customer was doing the restoration and I was doing the painting. There were some chassis parts that required being painted with a semi-gloss finish but Dupont didn't make a semigloss Imron. The chassis was sandblasted, metal prepped, sprayed with all the recommended primers and then topcoated with this "flattened" imron. It looked great but as soon as the guy started assembleng parts onto the chassis he discovered that the Imron was chipping off the primer at even the lightest of hits/touches. We called the DuPont rep, who came out and examined the prblem. His response was, "We don't warantee any of our paints once our flatting agent has been added, since it reduces the adhesion properties of the paint".
I mention this only to advise you to do a test for your self and see if there are going to be any chipping, flaking problems. Having witnessed the calibre of work you do, John, I would hate to see you run into a problem down the road.

Dave, you're not going to see chipping or flaking anyway with Pelucid since it's makeup is quite diffrent than paint. The DuPont agent is actually suggested for use by POR15 reps. We're testing right now and should have an answer for you early in the week.

And now I bring this back to the surface.... I clearcoated a 4' circular disk logo when in GA and it faces South West, 30' off the ground... gets LOTS of UV daily. (clear over 1-Shot). I have used the POR-15 products and highly recommended them over the years.... Now... problem .... the clear has turned chalky like an old car hood in a junkyard. NOT supposed to happen!!! It has been up for about 5 years now. Has anyone successfully just cleaned and recoated a Pelucid coating like this? Just wondering.........

the only problem i've heard with pelucid was putting it over one shot red or burgundy...i think they recommend the glisten(sp?) product now instead of pelicud. i had put pelucid on a few signs but one place moved its location and that sign is no longer around because of zoning and location. i would have liked to see how it held up over the years...the other one is an mdo site sign that gets beat to shyt on every worksite so its hard to determine anything on that one. let us know what you find out...i wonder if you just cleaned it up if the chalk would come off...or is it chalking under the pelucid surface?

I have a sign in my shop that is 4 years old and the pelucid is all checked and cracked. I haven't gotten to that part of the sign to address it yet. I'm not looking forward to it either.

I have been disappointed in the Pelucid. I did a small cedar carved sign about a year ago for my mother in NJ and clear coated it with Pelucid. This year on my return visit we re-coated it with spar varnish. I also used Pelucid on a sandblasted signfoam sign and last year during the hurricane season the portions that were covered with Pelucid turned a chalky white. I had to sand it off and re-paint.

Gonna start an old fight here, and it is nice to see you again Pierre, but I have to ask why people say pelucid is a UV inhibitor when THE MANUFACTURER MAKES NO SUCH CLAIMS. It's a great product, tough as nails no doubt. But not a UV inhibitor.

Mike..Sorry to correct you..but Pierre's last post on this thread was Feb 24'th in 2001!!!
As far as the problems folks seem to be having with Pelucid, I am sorry to hear that. Since the type of work I do doesn't require clearcoating I never had a reason to try it.
