Its a typical day in not so sunny England and ive just finished another long day at the shop creating some race car graphics & other trick signwork, a few more customers have come through the door with the usual "Gee we've never seen anything like this before anywhere" so it got me thinking ,just how many custom sign nuts is there doing that airbrush thing ? I airbrush so much I cant get the hissing sound of air outta my head! =)
I started airbrushing about 15 years ago (when I was 10 years old) when I first got into Radio Controlled cars and wanted to do cool paint work on the bodies.
I put the 'brush down for a while but one day I walked into an art supply shop and the pretty chrome finishes shined through the display case and got my attention. I ended up buying a couple. =)

Could someone tell me if there is a better way to thin Oneshot enamels that it may run through an air brush smoothly? I seem to be using at least 75% thinner. Would you think that a little too much concidering paint beign too thin on the finished sign. The paint at that point would'nt last too long under exterior elements. Also, I've had problems with useing the waterbase stuff supposedly made for airbrushing. It seems to dry too quick inside the air channel of the brush, causing backups along with splattering. Any takes pleas?

Half Moon Eclipse 4. Full Moon Eclipse 5. Total Eclipse 6. Little Las Vegas And they all stand proudly next to my Lettering Brushes next to my pencils, next to my etc!etc!

Steve, I don't know how my first post could have miss led you... but yes I am an Airbrush artist, and yes I own a sign company, so yes I am both...
Zion, you may want to use enamel reducer insted of paint thinner, for one shot, but I only use one shot using the wet-on-wet jersey stlye truck lettering, otherwise I use House of Kolor urathanes and clearcoat everything. As for the waterbase stuff, yep your right they dry up something feirce in the gun, yuck! I think this subject has been covered more exstensively try using the search tool.

WetPaint, I'm not an airbrush nutter yet, but I hope to pick up some tips and tricks at your Letterhead meet in England this September. After seeing you and Dave pull up in your newly airbrushed mega van at last year's "Bull and Brush" meet, I can't wait to see what you guys have been doing lately. Note to my Fellow Americans: flights are cheap, the Brits are charming, and the ale is exceptional. There's a link on the upcoming events page - don't miss this one.

zion, I cant help ya with the One Shot as I havent used it yet, but with the waterbased stuff, make sure you strain it before trying to spray it (to remove the larger solids) and depending which brand paint you are using, they have different additives (retarders, extenders, etc.) you can use to increase the dry time.

I think that I started as a "Poster Painter" and then went to a "Lettering Artist" to a "WallDog" to a "Pictorial Artist" and a "Vinylman" in the age of computers...A Designer of "Company Logos" to a "Detailer with a Airbrush!"..
I have never been called an "Airbrush Freak" before! I have starved and carved signs as well.. Builded neon for the tallest building.. in Canada. Applied a mural to the biggest backdrop... in Toronto.
I don't mean to jump back at you Capt. Ken but A Freak I am Not!
Laugh with this!
I am sorry about the last wrong statement being posted at the end.

Hey Steve, Impressive resume, I am just a sign guy, I make nice signs for nice people, mean signs for mean people and occasionally ugly signs for ugly people. Just so you know I never called you a freak... I said I was a freak, and there is nothing wrong with being a freak! Are you saying you don't like freaks?
And just so you know anybody who names there tools is borderline, mine are named "this damn thing is clogged again" and "Iwata new one" ------------------ -------------------------------------------------- "A wise man once said that, or was it a wise guy?"

I been using paasches for years. Got three of em. They are workhorses. But last year, I bought a vega 2000 and it's great. Very light in the hands, and sprays great. I use it more than anything nowadays. And like Captain Ken, I call all mine names you can't mention here. Especially when they do something I think is their fault.
