I am covering some lexan with Gerber translucent vinyl (24"x144")using Rapid Tac, my problem is that the pre mask paper is pulling away from the adhesive (T Rite 6592). I've got eight of these to do and if I have to pull off all of that gooey/stringy adhesive seperately I'm going to go crazy! I use a fair amount of Rapid Tac but have never had a problem like this! Am I doing something wrong???

Greg I recently just had the same thing happen to me. I was using 3M 3620-22. It's not the rapid tack thats the problem. The problem is the paper backing got wet. I had a piece 4'x12' to do, it was 2 colors, one side went on fine, the other got wet, and the backing stuck to the translucent vinyl, I was lucky, my supplier had an a spare piece and let me have it. Here's how I did it. pour the rapid tac on your substrate smear it with your hands over the piece of material, on another table or area peel the backing off and pour some rapid tac on the vinyl, rub the same way. even if you don't have help (depending on what size it is) you can do it yourself, just flip it over and squeege the baby down. whaaalaaa it's done. Hope it helps...

greg..I read you problem a bit different that Cisco. If you applied the vinyl to the lexan using RapidTac and THEN sprayed rapidTac on the premask to make it easier to remove the premask, then maybe you waited too long to pull the premask off. I have found that RapidTac will cause the premask to seperate from its adhesive if you wait too long. About 30 seconds is all that is needed in my experience. In the case of a graphic that large, I'd just spray a small area at a time or wait a while to let the graphic "set up" on the lexan and pull the premask off without wetting it.

Dave, You hit it right on! By the time I had sprayed the top of the premask, squeegeed it and went back to the start it was pulling apart! I was really concerned about the vinyl wanting to lift up, but after doing the next few without wetting it seems to work just fine. They all will be able to sit a day or two before I have all of the artwork ready to actually letter them anyway so I should be fine.

Well, close ! The truth is; transfer tape becomes MORE tacy as it ages, making it harder to release totally ! Buy "fresh" tape, store in plastic bag, out of light sourse, air, heat. Your applications will go much smoother when you take good care of your tape !! Roger

I can't say how long my supplier holds onto the pre mask, but I do know that I go through 3-4 30" rolls a month (that was the size I was using on this job). So, unless my supplier sits on it for ages it is "fresh".

Roger, that transfer tape transformation only happens beyond 8 years, and even then it's not major.

Hey Pierre, are you quoting "clinical reports" from Arlon?? Or are we talking "real field results"?? Put some(mostly used roll) out in the sun or under a window for a few days, then try it out !! Roger
