A few months ago I did a lettering on a bare aluminum tank. (Sectic Tank Truck) I just used a little Bon Ami cake soap followed by Windex. Truck came out great, dispite the aroma while I was doing the job.

Make sure the surface is warm enough to apply the vinyl. If the tank is full its going to take alot of effort to warm it up. I saw that nightmare unfold just in the past week.
