The new studio is coming along nicely. Most of the shelving units are now in place as is the framework for the desk.
We are doing all the finish woodwork and backing plywood for the plasterwork which will follow in the new year. We will paint from the top down. Once the overhead work is finished I will do the tree beside the stairway and last will come the ceramic tile floor.
Except for the oak bookshelves, the exposed wood will be covered with carved concrete work which will look like cartoon wood, weathered and full of character. The ceiling will be painted plaster and will be fairly dark especially towards the edges with lots of blending to give it a rich ancient feel. The ceramic tile floor will be warm brown with a rich red border around the two levels.
Above my desk over the windows the massive beam will bear the inscription in latin "first dream then build" The beam that cuts through the library wall will say "knowlege is found in books". Both will be gilded of course!
Many months of work ahead I think, sandwiched between the busy schedule we anticipate over the next year businesswise.
I'm still hoping to be operational in the studio before the new year....
The first shot is towards the library wall and lower level. The FKAB panel will hang in the center top space above the center beam as soon as I can get the woodwork stained. Very soon!
The second shot is of the top level of the studio. The desk steel framework is visible curving around the windows. I will hopefully start cutting the steel top tomorrow.
We are having lots of fun as we make this longstanding dream come true at last!!

I can only imagine working in that atmosphere. I love the flowing lines and arcs. As Pat King would say, "Out of the box", but that IS you isn't it?

They ought to put a centerfold of your shop in signcraft magazine...that is awesome. I like the lighting. Do you work in a quiet place? That room looks like it's begging for a sound system...you have one planned ?

I like to work in a fairly quiet environment, with my favorite music at a subdued level. For now we will hook up my old video and sound equipment but as time goes on (and the budget permits) we will replace it with all higher quality digital stuff.
We did wire the studio for THX surround sound and it should play well acoustically in the room. My son-in-law Phoenix is a sound man extraordinaire and planned that part for me.
Plans are for a small plasma screen tv on my desk in the near future. I also enjoy sort of watching educational TV (like the discovery channel) while I work and the collection of DVD's keeps growing. I enjoy the behind the scene looks at how movies are made as they are valuable research and inspirational tools for me. Longer term plans are for a good size plasma screen monitor/tv on a wall in the lower area where I will meet with clients. With a wireless keyboard I can access the computer from the small conference table and call up images for my presentations. All this stuff as well as three computer stations is already wired and ready to go.
We've also put in empty conduits to permit access of future technology as I'm sure there will be a great many innovations during the lifespan of the studio space.
I'm really looking forward to getting in there!

Certainly, I can't speak for Tom or anyone else at SignCraft, but I do know that they are constantly looking for good material for articles. If Dan would contact Tom Iltrot I'm sure they would appreciate any photos and an explanation of the building process.

Dan, Do you want to adopt me? Really! I'd LOVE to be able to run around your house and shop. What a fantastic playground you have there! Congrats and best of luck with it all.
The side of the Moon that really wishes she was a kid again... so when I'm running around and acting like a fool it would be "ok" because I would BE a KID again.
