I HATE XP!!!!!!!!!! First I can't use my Multipass C5000 which is my fax machine (we sorta fixed that ), Now it won't let my scanner work - Epson Perfection 1250- and what really frosts me is that it seemed to work until I got high speed hooked up then quit . It actually scanned the preview and now it won't recognize it. It won't scan a preview again either. I've tried turning everything off, checked all the connections tried to reload the software and it says XP doesn't support it - How come it worked at first????? - I am soooooo fed up with the stinking glitches - the only thing I like about xp is my wireless mouse/keyboard, which is the only reason I switched.

Sometimes reinstalling or overwriting stuff isn't enough with Windows XP.
Occasionally, you may have to uninstall a device in the Windows Control Panel, reboot the system, and then reinstall it fresh. The Windows XP Registry may still have information in the system that can cause problems that don't get fixed with an overwriting. Uninstalling should clear up the resistry and allow for a "cleaner" installation.
The typical way to do this is to go to Control Panel/System and click on the "Hardware" tab. Below is a button for "Device Manager" that, when opened, shows a list of the hardware in the system. Click on the small "+" symbol next to imaging devices and your scanner should be listed there. Right clicking it gives you the options to refresh, uninstall or update the drivers for the scanner as needed.
Once you uninstall the scanner, you'll have to reboot the system and reinstall the scanner, or if you are lucky, Windows XP will find the scanner and set it up for you when you reboot.
Hope this helps... Rapid

Op - poppycock! XP works great for me..excellent actually...
Kelly - I don't think you mentioned doing this...but, did you go to the different peripheral manufacturers sites and look for updated drivers specifically for Win XP?
If not, you need to do this.
Also, when you upgraded...did you install "over" Win 98 or reformat and do a clean install with the XP upgrade, using the Win98 disk when asked for proof of owning a prior Windows OS?
I am a firm believer in wiping the system and doing a "clean" install. You can do this even using the "upgrade" disk. You don't need the full version because basically, an upgrade is a full version anyway....it's just cheaper because it assumes you're a current Windows OS user.
Clean installs and reloading programs and XP certified drivers derived from the manufacturers websites is the way to go in my opinion.
Just don't forget to back up everything first on cd's, zip drives, DVD RW's or something you can trust....even another hard drive for backup is a good thing.
Check out the web sites for updated XP drivers though....this might help ya out.

Kelly, I have XP home and an Epson 1250 Perfection. I had NO problems installing the scanner or using it.
First thing is to do as Ray suggested and make sure you go through uninstall, reboot, then try to install the scanner. If you have any problems after that, give me a call & I'll be happy to compare my stuff to your stuff.

I agree Todd. I have XP on my laptop and 2000 on the desktop. I plan on soon buying XP and installing it on the desktop too.
It is stabler than either 98 or 2000. No conflicts, as you say, after downloading the newest XP drivers for hardware. No software problems at all, and I have programs I am running from when I used Win95.
I LIKE Win XP big time!!!

Kelly You said you started having these problems after you got your High Speed hooked up.. Is your High Speed internet Hub/Router a USB device. If it it that might be your problem. I had a similar Experience with my Wireless that was USB. It seems that the USB Internet conection takes control of USB ports and won't let other devices work properly. You might want to look at a Ethernet conection they seem to be much more stable as they are not processor dependent. Just another Idea to mess with..

OK - I guess I posted in sheer frustration this afternoon. I am running the high speed on an ethernet card and it was a XP message that said it didn't support my scanner when I went to reinstall the software - Kissy did you have to download any drivers when you switched? I just get so frustrated at the way we are forced into updating perfectly good hardware because "new & improved" won't support it. I am relieved to hear that it can be done, so I'll settle down now . BTW this was installed on a brand new hard drive. I bought it & a new wireless mouse & keyboard 'cause I thought I would treat myself and didn't realize till I went to install it that the mouse/keyboard only ran on XP. So I went out and purchased XP. When I installed XP there was a whole 'nuther story to get my plotter up and running, Then I found out that my printer/fax/copier (Canon Multipass) wasn't supported. We did find a driver so it will print in B/W but not color and I haven't had the chance to check out the fax from computer feature yet. Then today when I went to use the scanner that got spit out too, and I'd had it. Thanks for your kind replies to my temper tantrum

BTW I am also having problems since high speed with my computer bogging down. I now am disabling high speed when I am not on the internet so that it doesn't "sludge" my system. It is bad enough that the sounds are like something from a horror movie - they seem to reverberate. The high speed seems to be fast, although that may just be relative to what I'm used to. I'm sure there is something not set up right - any ideas?

Kelly, it also would be helpful to know some of your system specs: processor (speed and type), ram(amount, type, dedicated or shared), etc.....what peripherals are hooked up...etc.
This might help give a fuller picture of what you have going on. XP should give less problems with programs "bogging" down as it uses memory a lot more efficiently....But you need a MINIMUM of 256 mb of ram and I highly recommend at least 512, preferably 1 gig.
Also...is your new hard drive a 5200 rpm or 7200 rpm drive? The 5200rpm drives are cheaper, but also access data slower...
