I have been asked to replace some 6" cast metal letters (with studs)on the outside of a school. Temperature can be expected to be around 10F. Is Silicone Adhesive going to work ok? Is it the right thing to use? I suspect, these letters might be missing in the first place, because kids pulled them out....

I have never tried it, but one of the home improvement shows - Jon Eakes (I love him) showed using a foam pipe sleeve to cover the caulking gun to keep the silicone warm when using it outside in the winter. He also slipped one of those disposable hand warmer packs inside between the caulking tube and the sleeve to keep it warm longer. Seemed a clever idea - but it won't keep the caulk warm while it cures! Debbie

Lotti, there is a silicone specifically made for curing in very cold temps. We keep a few tubes at the studio but I don't remember the brand name. It is a common one.
I should add that Lat and Liz installed 17 24" brass characters using that silicone in a concrete wall last week. Outside temp was 18 degrees.

Don and I installed gemini letters on the Catholic Church last November, and every letter is still intact. We used GE siliconeII. The building was new stucco, and everything looks good. The mounting method was the studs with the standoff plastic pads, so we squeezed silicone into the holes, and also put a bit on the plastic pad.
Good luck.

The silicone will take longer to set up in the cold. One time, I had to install some letters on an Aluminum sign panel in a howling wind at 4 degrees F (in Dallas, no less). The adhesive on my masking tape kept freezing and I couldn’t stick the pattern to the panel. I got a squeeze bottle of water and squirted it between the paper and the panel and froze the pattern to the metal. I had to break the paper off afterward. The reason I was working in those conditions was that I was going out of town the next day and had to finish the job before I left.

GE Exterior II silicone - works up here (even at O°F /-18°C. Helps if both materials being bonded can be warmed. One watch out is to make sure all the old silicone is cleaned away.
