I have seen various signmaking CDs on Ebay with vector art, logos, graphics, clip art, fonts, the works - for about 20 bucks. I'm assuming these are pirated, bootlegged, whatever the correct term is, because I don't see any brand name listed.

If this is the case, I don't want to support them, but I would at least like to know which software they are ripping off, because one of the ads says their disc has logos of all the professional sports teams, and shows a few.

I want to get a disc with all the pro sports logos, but the "sports" software I see advertised by Beeline or OCA only appears to have generic sports figures and logos (like "Wildcats" in script). If there are pro team logos on there they must be keeping it a secret because they don't show any.

Any help??

P.S. I know about the Russian site for the occasional logo, but I might be needing a lot and would rather just have them all on a disk.

A lot of professional sports logos are or were available at The SLE but at present their website amounts to a homepage only. Educated guess is they were sued or arrested.

They seem to have had some problems similar to this a number of months back and all of their files got put up at The Russian Website.

Another educated guess is that the eBay folks have downloaded them and put them on CD.

Reproducing them for anything beyond your own personal use could well land you in a heap of trouble both civil and criminal. [Eek!]

they are there for sale on eBay all on CDs that were gathered from places similar to theSLE. the Sports Logo Encyclopedia site was a hobby site where you could download most sporting logos from NFL, NBA, MLB, NCAA and many other now-defunct leagues. most were re-created and not "offical" files. if you wanted a very close render of any teams logo, it was probably there. the site went to membership only, then shut down altogether. like was mentioned before some are on the free sites, other folks are "cashing in" by selling the CD compilations, but all would be considered an illegal copyright infringement on the trademark holders if reproduced. that is the reason companies like BeeLine or OCA would not dream of trying to re-sell these as their own collections.

...without expressed written consent, remember?

Welcome to the age of home CD burners.

If you can copy it, burn it, and sell it online, you're probably gonna get sued, but there are a bunch of "Ebayers" making this a sad reality every day.

Take any major sports league (MLB, NFL, NHL, and others) and add the word "Properties". Those are the people who are gonna be knockiing on your door for knocking off their copyrighted logos. With all the online crap out there, they can hardly keep up with it all.

As a sign painter who likes to keep his copyrights, I actually feel bad for these Properties people. Imagine trying to inforce them with the whole internet being used against you.

Not an easy task...

It is possible that someone may be selling a "used" clipart CD on eBay.

Pete; I did EDGE work for years for both the NHL and MLB. I got the files from the head offices and design agencies involved. If you're doing work for an "official function", then they should be able to supply you with just about anything you need. If it's 'unofficial' work, be darned careful about reselling logos (in other words, DON'T).

Thanks for the help, folks. A client had me paint a NHL hockey team's logo on his son's bedroom wall, and I was anticipating all his buddies wanting one, also.
