Only took me THREE months but I finally got my ENTIRE home network completed, running and fully-accessible. I had pretty much written it off but I SWORE to myself that I could do it.
When I first got my new computer (a stunning high-tech new toy courtesy of Mr. Richard Bustamante), I hooked up the wireless networking with my new computer, my old Win 98 desktop and my laptop. The most important part was that all three be able to share my cable internet access which was accomplished fairly easily. Then I managed to get my laptop and my old computer to share files amongst each other. What I could not do was have either of those two access files on my new computer or vice versa. Rather than drive myself nuts (I'm fairly impatient and have a good old-fashioned New Jersey Italian temper - I don't throw things but I yell a lot), I took a two month deep-breath and just decided I wouldn't let it bother me. Well, this morning I thought I'd tackle it once again (like I don't have enough stress in my life right now! LOL).
AND I DID IT!!!!!!!!!!!! BTW, Bill Gates should be hung up by his eyelashes. I am a pretty intelligent, computer savvy woman and it took me two hours of clicking this, clicking that, changing this user setting and that user password, etc, etc, etc. I CANNOT believe in this day and age they can't make it easier for people. (The first person who tells me to buy a MAC gets smacked.)
Thanks for indulging my outburst of joy but I just had to tell someone about my accomplishment.

I'm using my computer for use with a complete home security system which will monitor my entire home. Using a laptop and cellular phone can also be used in conjunction with the security sytem while away to view the homes camera monitoring system to view whats going on if there is a break in or if you just home-sick. The system takes care of all contains including the home theater system, lights, appliances, etc...

Mac is short for MacIntosh...a early apple, that is very popular in the northern climates, but doesn't keep well. Sop the eating season is short. They are green with red sploches, crisp, and kinda tart.
Hmmmm....kinda sounds like the people who use computers with the same name!

....and for $80 you can buy a USB flash memory stick with 256mb of storage.
They are about as big as a very small lipstick case...you simply plug them into your usb port on your computer (most cases have front access now), they are instantly recognized as a storage device....you drag and drop or save files onto it's drive letter just like you would a hard drive...unplug it and walk over to your other computer and plug it into a usb port and open the file(s). No moving parts.
And you can stick it in your pocket. The Zip drive is history.

Hi Kimmy, Thanks for the plug. I built a "screamer" I'm not sure...something like a 2.6GHz./512MB RAM/ATI dual monitor 64MB 3D card/Sony DVD/CDRW/52X CDROM/and this see`through case with a neon light in it. Look frick`n cool. Testing her machine for a week was pure fun. Very fast.
I'm glad you got your network going. I know all about what you went through. With IP 192.196.1.1, and subnet 255.255.255.1, and WAN is connected to LAN, through a router...that has hundreds of settings. And the Lights. Look at all the lights. Is the Cable light blinking? Is this on? Is that hooked up? The only thing you can do about it is; read all you can about networking, then go do it. It is a grand feat you've done. I admire your persistence and cleverness.
To put this into perspective...Kimberly made a four station, multi-platform wireless WAN network. No simple feat. I like it! "You da man." (anyway, you know what I mean)
