I've got a client who's opening a new salon. She is an empowered African American lady and was specific about everything but the font. She wants the sign to represent African women, power, pride, etc. and wants me to use a strong "African Typeface" for her header. I've taken "Greece Black" and "Jurasic", given them a heavy outline, converted the outline to object and deleted the original and it looks ok, but just ok. Does anyone know of a font that would be considered an african typeface?

Hiya Terry, There is a free font called African produced by Allen R. Walden. If you need it, let out a yell. Also, you can check out a type 1 font that's called Afrika Borders. It appears, to me at least, to be authentic african designs that can be used as borders or accents. It was designed by Castle Systems and is copyrighted.
Havin' fun,

In a scenario like this I would go to the local bookstore, buy a few books on African art, study them at night after dinner, and the next day design an African alphabet which is unique to the client. This method promotes design skills and the alphabet on the clients sign isn't the same as other 'African' type signs throughout the world. And it's fun!!!!!

I agree with Zinjaro. There are some freebie fonts out there that are "African" typestyles. The only problem is they are quite 'busy' and can be a pain to cut.
