When it comes to coating out your substrates for signs (ply, aluminium etc) I get better results from the spray gun and paint dries faster but the paint is more costly and it takes a little more time. What is your preference? Would you rather get the roller out?

on ply...it's a roller every time, unless i am doing fades....even then i lay down a good basecoat. I don't LIKE thinning the paint that much, and I have seen first hand what the sun can do to signs that have been weakened by spraying. It may just be me, but i think it is a good deal more durable as a rolled on finish than as a spray. Not as technical either.....

To me it depends on substrate, size of same, and budget. MDO - Roller. Aulminum - if can't buy it in color needed for background; buy white & cover with high performance vinyl. Coroplast - same. Magnetics - same. Alumalite - same. Omega board - same. Brick wall - paper pattern & hog bristle. Interior wall - latex on small roller. 'jus depends. . . ..

Whether you use spray or roller, I'd always brush on the primer on plywood.Brushing works it better into the grain. A lot of architects over here stipulate that in the specification.
