First off let me apologize to any who where in chat last night. I left in a huff with a final comment of "This is BS". I am extremely frustrated with setting up my chat. I have learned so much from this board over the years and would love to be more active in chat.

A BIG thanks to Si Allen, Kissy and Danny Busselle for the emails and help. I still don't have it yet but will keep trying.

I find that mIRC chat is like getting in your car and driving across country, then getting on a boat and sailing to a foreign country just to get a hamburger at the McDonald's in Singapore. All the time I have a McDonald's 2 blocks from me. Makes no sense. Anyway, for those who love convoluted chat clients mIRC is perfect. For me I prefer the simplicity of chats like MSN, AOL or Yahoo. But I desperately want to interact with my fellow neighbors in chat so I will continue my quest.

Please be patient with me as I get a bit testy when I am frustrated. Thanks friends.

Steve,

Have you tried using the big green CHAT button link directly from letterville? It's pretty simple, just click the link, click "Yes" on the pop-up window asking for permission to run a Java applet, then you will be taken directly into the chat room and won't have to worry about registering nicknames.

Steve...
I agree with Mike. Try the green button. mIRC is too sofisticated for a little gal like me. I deleted it.

Mirc is one of the oldest chats around. It can be a most rewarding experience. I used to be a channel operator, a script programmer, and was well invloved with several servers. I once had one of the most sophisticated irc systems that automated everything for me. It was so sophisticated that an accasional less experienced user felt threatened at its abilities. Now i am just a user hobbyist and like it this way.

As for being frustrated. Yes, some become extremely frustrated over something as basic as registering a user name. However once some one can get you thru it you will kick yourself as to how simple it really was... In reality, the server is assuming certain things that most people feel should be typed or said in normal conversation.. That causes the frustration.

There are just three steps....

Step One:
Register your user name::

/nickserv register password email
The password is some word ,,any word you can remember u use to keep your user name secure.
The email is your real email addres
You dont type in your name because the server already knows your name. Also, every thing you input must match. If you change one letter in your nick then you are not the same person..

two:
after a few minutes you will get an email from a server giving you special code.
all you have to do is cut and paste exactly what is there: It will look like this..

/NICKSERV VERIFY xxxxxvvvvnnnnn33222ZjAA-423631223654

Three: now u identify yourself with some variant of the following

/ns identify password
Identifying is a way for the server to know it is you. No one can impersoanate you now.

thats it..
Now you are regged, and id'd. After that you have the option of having mirc atuomate your identify command. Any one in chat can guide you through that.

I understand your frustration Steve. Most internet chat programs still use technology that goes back to the early days of the Internet. Imagine what it would be like using DOS commands to operate our new modern programs. We're constantly looking for a better way.

Registering your nick is normally a good thing if you have an intimate relationship with nickserv and chanserv. Those that use the simplier green button chat program will find registering your nick complicates the chat process. We recommend you log onto the BullBoard, use the green button chat and allow it to use your BB username. In most cases, this is your real name.

We're constantly looking for a program or process that will make it easier for everyone to join in on chat. Our goal is to one day have a chat that will allow live webcams, voice & file transfer along with the chat we are all used to. I'm hoping to find time to look at Microsoft's new Live Meeting program later tonight.

In the meantime, we recommend new users use the green button chat. Think of it as the automatic transmission in your car. You're using the same old geeky IRC network of chat, but you don't have to shift all the gears manually.

If you get really frustrated with chat and/or HeadTV issues, the worse thing you can do is feel dumb and give up. Pick up the phone and call us at 519-787-2673. We're sorta dumb at this stuff too, but we have learned a few things from trial and error. We're here to help.

Mr. Mayor,

Thank you for the kind words and generous offer. I am so used to Yahoo chat. My parents live in PA and we routinely voice chat and use our web cams. I will drive across country, get on the boat and have a Big Mac in Singapore. [Wink] In the meantime thanks for all you and Barb do, hosting this forum. See ya in chat! [Thanks]

A little positive in the "other" direction Monte [Razz]

Mirc works fine once you are registered! Curt's "simple" instructions are not THAT hard to follow. It gives you the options to get photo files etc from other Mirc and "side chat" the babes [Wink]

I have problems with the Green Button anyway hahahaha. For some reason it locks up my puter when I try to exit! Weird!

I understand what you are saying Bushie [Smile]

But what no one realizes is how many times I have "registered" with MIRC after having been "registered" with them for over 6 years when "they" screwed up my original registration.

Now... every time I get on the green chat it locks up on me and that gives me access to the MIRC channels...go figure!

To tell the truth...every evening trying to get in on the chat is so incredibly excrutiating I'm on the verge of blowing it off all together...the only reason I haven't so far is many good friends are behind that "door number one".

Seriously,.. someone needs to find an answer to the chat thing (I know Steve is doing his best)but I gotta tell you the last thing I want when I get home at nite is ONE MORE HASSLE.

See you in chat [Smile]

All these eddits are for my abhorant spelling. [Smile]

The answer may be some one walking you thru the steps on da phone. I've done it several times and each time we discover something that causes a hassle.
