As most here know we are currently laboring on a substancial project at West Edmonton Mall. At times I am struck by the uniqueness of the job and our surroundings.
Edmonton is pretty far north... it's really winter here already. Outside it's been below zero for at least a week, and snowing the last few days. That alone if abnormal for me, as where we live this type of weather is a possibility, but only for a short while and in the dead of winter.
We are working in a five acre room, climate controlled and well lit. The lowest ceiling is forty feet above us. Outside doesn't really exist for us, except when we walk home across the street to our hotel.
Inside this 'room' we do our construction as if we were outside. We have our deliveries made into the structure, literally backing the trucks in from the outside. We have at our disposal a crane for lifting our prefabricated pieces into place and a sixty foot snorkle lift to get up to the upper reaches of our project. They are currently setting up a 80 foot long swing stage for us to do the mural, half at a time.
Inside the large room, we weld, mix conrete, paint and a hundred other things, in shirt sleeves, while a blizzard rages outside.
Around us, folks are enjoying themselves in a theme park. The world's largest tripple rollercoaster ROARS as it races at 60 plus miles an hour. Guests are blasted 130 feet in the air on the space shot ride right adjacent to our construction site. And a hundred other things are going on around us as we build the facades and signage for the next two new attractions.
It's downright bizaar at times.
