I am completely new at all this, a soon to be student of Auto collision repair. What I really want to do though is do custom paint jobs on motorcycles and classic cars. I read an article on Jack Giachino in "Northern Rodder" and contacted him. He told me to get involved in Paint or Panal jams in my area to learn from others in the field. Anyone know anything about these, or planning on holding one somewhere where I could get in on it? I live in the midwest- Cedar Rapids, IA to be exact. Any and all help would be appreciated.

Kevin my primary biz is auto paint supply so i'll stick my $.02 in here.... outside of going to.getting involved in panel jams and meetsone of the best things you or anyone interested in this field can do for yourself is to buy Jon Kosmoski's 1st 3 videos and his first book and read it and then watch the video enuff times to where you can recite the things, follow the procedures he outlines to the letter then start adapting yourself or changing things as you have to. No matter what anyone tells you that first set is about the best instructional sets out there not just for custom painting but for painting as a whole. Follow his procedures and you'll feel at times some steps may be 'the long way',but start at at say 15steps and cut out/combine them as you feel comfortable, Yah there are other videos out there right now all done by the hotshot of the week/month/magazine article series, and those in all honesty are more marketing tools than instruction...sure they teach you some tricks but technically they're about as useful as i dunno what & by putting the cart b4 the horse esp since youre brand new you'll shortchange yourself to a huge degree, not to mention you'll learn the same 4 tricks everyone else knows. Learn the basics and principles first, and more impt than anything else....don't get yourself in the mindset of feeling you need to use one specific material by one manufacturer..using the same paint sysytem some other guy is isn't gonna make your stuff look or work any easier...learn what each thing(product) does on its own product wise even if you have to spend hours reading manuals and MSDS sheets and you'll be surprised at the combinations of things you'll be able to put together without a problem and how good your stuff looks compared to everyone elses. You can find those videos and books i know at www.moseart.net and www.dixieart.com ,i'm sure someone is gonna mention somewhere else and i know both Borders and Barnes and Noble carry the book series. As far as straight up painting and collision repair Brodhead & Garrett put out a really good line of videos and books,do a net search for brodhead garrett teaching tools and you can find the catalog, and theres a very good, simple book to understand book called Automotive Paint Handbook by John Pfthanstiel you can find at any bookstore just about. One more thing...when you strike out on your own and name the biz....for god sakes if you're supposed to have a C at the beginning of a word use it and don't swap it for a K .
