Good employees are hard to find. I tried two young guys this summer, hoping they might work into permanent employees as we grow our company once more. Unfortunately they weren't what I was hoping for and no longer work for us.

Last year we spent eight weeks here at the mall. One young fellow caught my attention. I didn't talk to him much, but he was doing everything right for his current employer and really stuck out from the crowd.

He is working more around our site this year. And still doing very well.

Last week he approached me about a job. I was noncomittal, but didn't say no outright. This is one of my tests of character for prosective employees.

He passed the test with flying colors. He was persistant without being pushy. His present employer has made him some good offers, even an apprenticiship in the trade of his choice.

I made it clear that I couldn't offer the same, outlined what I would pay, what I expected, and other terms of employment. He would also have to relocate to B.C., a big step for anybody. I urged him to think things through carefully over the next few days.

He did his homework and was back again today asking for some of my time to talk things through with me once more. Smart kid.

He brought his wife in this time to meet me. And offered his services once more. He even sweetened the deal. He's coming in for a few days to test drive his new job. He doesn't want to be paid. (I'll pay anyway.)

If, after a couple of days he still likes the work and the crew and I still like him, he's hired.

And with this guy I don't think I'll be disappointed.

Marty

The article that was featured on the front page of the business section of the Edmonton Journal must have gone on the wire where the Regina paper picked it up... wonder where else it appeared?

Did my mug shot make it in your paper too? [Smile]

It struck me as funny the article named me as the creative guru but didn't mention our company name or where we are from. You just never know what these guys are going to print. [Smile]

It was still a very positive article for the mall and for us. That kind of advertising is hard to buy!

Nope... no mug shot... just that line. The article was mostly about new rides by Gary Lamphier of Can West News Serice.
