I know you've done this. Weed a bunch of copy, pull out the tape, put the tape to the vinyl, squeegee it down, and you notice one letter missing! I HATE THAT!
I know I oughter pay better attention to what Im doing, but sometimes my mind wanders. Sometimes it comes back. [Roll Eyes] [Big Grin]

Funny this topic should come up tonight. Rochon informed this afternoon that every once in a while you just have to sacrifice a letter to the lettergods. [Razz]

And... when you have 50 or so of the same sign, watch out for the commas and periods.

I think we get bored and careless or perhaps over confident. Then we start jerking the vinyl off instead of carefully weeding.

Nice to know I'm not the only falible person on the board.

Oh well...All in a day's fun!

Have you ever dug through the garbage, pulled out your big ball of weeded vinyl to see if you can find that letter in there? I have, and found it many times! [Big Grin]

That's why, when you've got those boo-boo pieces that cut wrong or whatever, NEVER throw them away until AFTER you're done!!

If you throw them away, then the letter you needed to replace will be on the bunched up, crunched up part. If you keep them handy to cover any mistakes... they just won't happen.

Hey Don,
With vinyl, there's always a space left on the substrate for a replacement letter. And like Terry said, sometimes you can dig through the vinyl ball and find it.
Getting a new letter off the brush may be easy but you normally have to replace the whole line. [Smile]

Havin' fun,

Checkers

This is the kind of post I love the most!
Of course when I need some important info right away, that is the most valuable, & when someone shares tips I will eventually need, that too makes this place so great...
but my daily dose of letterville is primarily the social escape from work-aholocism & being able to read about & share trade related trivia is always fun. [Smile]

Terry, I couldn't count the times I have unwound the ball of vinyl in the trash for the missing letter. I even found my dads wedding ring that way. I had wore it to work on fathers day, & freaked out when I noticed it missing when I returned home. I remembered balling up big armloads of vinyl I was getting elbow deep into, & fighting to get out of, so raced down to the shop & found it.

How about when the weeding tool breaks loose the middle of a letter that takes flight never to be seen again? or almost never... a couple hours of meeting with clients & then seeing self in mirror with pink speck in my hair... I've even found those little letter centers the next day after a shower or two, still stuck under my forearm or elbow outta sight.

Haha, I knew I wasnt alone! The other day, I weeded some copy and lost two letters in the fray.
Got in the trash like you guys, and couldnt find it. Went and cut em again and place em in their respective spots. Went to Wal-Mart that afternoon, was checking out and the girl said "You have two little letters on your shirt."
Yep, thats where they went.

I pulled an all day/nighter one time flingin vinyl like crazy. I went to the mini mart on my way home at about 3am and could'nt figure out why the girl behind the counter was laughin at me... So I go home and change to plop down on the couch and see a huge piece of red vinyl stuck to the seat of my pants.... that was a moment where no ones around and ya laugh out loud by yourself... All in a days work! [Wink]

reminds me of a day in the workshop when I had a visiting letterhead there

he watched me weed a lot of tiny little letters... I mean it was almost magnifying glass stuff

and I was cursing the dots on the i's and the centres of the a's that kept jumping off the backing sheet and disapearing all over the place

all the time I was writing down what I had to re-cut on a piece of paper

after i had finished weeding I tape'd it all down and then carefuly went about lifting the appo tape (plus letters) from the backing sheet to tranfer to the job

when 'ol mate' says
"why are you making it so hard on yourself?"

I asked what he ment and he procedded to show me on the next panel that was identicle to the 60zillion little letters I had just spent so much time on

first he masked the whole thing... without weeding

then he turned the sheet over and lifted the waxed backing sheet of the letters n appo tape in one quick movement... didn't lose a thing
(appo tape is sticker than backing sheet)

then he stuck it on the panel and removed the appo tape after bashing it on with a sqeegie
...again lost nufin

not a dot not a center

then with no time wasted proceeded to lift out the stuff that was not required

first the background then the centers nothing fell off that was needed

seems that the adhesive as we know sticks way better to the substrate than to the backing sheet
doh

that was a long time ago now but I can honestly say I never lost another letter, or part there of by just following those easy steps

even with big stuff that gets weeded first
I still turn the work over and remove the backing from the tape n letters, not the other way around

and I am forever greatful to my mate Mick

cheers
gail
