Ground signs, other than monument signs, when supported by a single pole, column or braces shall contain a cover that is at least two (2) feet in width perpindicular to the street or right of way. For signs supported by more than one pole, column or brace, each support structure shall be at least 1.5 feet square.
Anyone have a clue what that means??? What kind of cover???

Amy, it is not very well worded, is it? I would say they are asking you to build a skirt around the pole so that the pole is concealed in an architectural element. For a single pole it has to be 2 feet on a side, for double poles 1.5 feet on a side for each of the two poles. Vic G

Yes Amy, it's a pole cover. They are usually referring to flourescent signs, but you should get a clarification. It's usually like Victor says, a metal box that conceals to pole, the 2' width is the side facing you, not the side facing the street. Often these pole covers are sprayed with a stucco finish.

I always wonder what the meeting is like to WRITE these codes!! Who comes UP with some of this stuff! Our local sign code, under section 7.04 General standards, says: #6. No sign shall project beyond the property line into the public right-of-way, except for the following: 1. awnings, canopies, and marquees (aren't these SIGNS!) 2. banners 3. projecting signs 4. suspended signs WHAT!!? HUH!? No signs should do this except for the signs that do this!?! AAAARRRGGGHHHHH!!!!!

Thanks guys! I wonder if it applies to signs which sandwich posts in the middle? Guess I have some calls to make. Problem is, these idiots don't like to be bothered. They don't have problems making dumb rules though!!

I would guess that if the pole shows, it is subject to those specs. If two faces sandwich the pole further up, that would not factor in the requirements...
but if the signs sandwich the pole at ground level, then I would consider that a "Monument" sign & therefore exempt.

Submit the sign plans. wait for the approval... Put it up. Let them decide what it means. More often that not, they will over look lots of those "special" rules..
If you go in asking for interpretations you are looking for lots of aggravation. It all depends on what the inspector feels at the moment.

Many/most signs that are under 75 square feet are going to look horrid with a pole cover that size. What are they thinking? What about a 4x8 post and panel? Geeshhh.....

I don't plan on asking. Technically we are replacing their sign which was hit by a car. I just didn't want to have them come knocking on the door when they get in trouble!!!
I don't hardly do any work in that particular city. The city hall people are real jerks.
Edit: Dern fingers won't type today!!
