Hi all A question For you I put some lettering on my car and I decided I didn't like it so I took it off...Question is was the paint junk on my car or does this happen often..??? The car is old a 79 I think but wasn't I shocked when it started to take paint an all. Good thing it wasn't a big area..

It sounds more like a poor repaint on your car than any thing else. You will just have to make your new graphic big enough to cover the whole area.
You could throw on a paint splash and some sponge graphics to camoflague the area. I did that on my truck when it got keyed. I rubbed out the light scratch with rubbing compound and Finesse polishing compound. I then lightly sponged color over the really bad area and wrapped it all the way around the truck.
Just a thought.....

I'd blame it on the paint. Either the paint was just so old, it was already starting to fail and the vinyl removal put that added stress on it or it was a bad repaint.
I did some stripes on a car this summer, tried telling the guy they were gonna look icky. Week later he decided I was right and wanted them changed. He had started to peel vinyl off the door...took clear coat with it & even some of the paint. Initially he tried blaming me. It only took the paint off the driver's door, upon further investigation he discovered the car had been wrecked or damaged & driver's door had been repainted with a very poor prep job.

Been there, done that - on a client's vehicle too. I had a real problem because the graphic was a digital print that I had outsourced. If memory serves me correctly, Older Fords with silver paint were a problem and I believe Dodge/Chrysler blue too. These days, any finish that looks remotely suspicious, gets a tape test first before I quote the job. With the clients permission, I just apply a strip of masking tape to the paint & let it sit for a few minutes. When I peel the tape off and the finish comes with it, I'll refuse the job until they fix it.

All auto makers had paint concerns from 79-91 as this was the "lead free era" before coming up with new adhesion methods. Ford,GM, & Chrysler were hit hard with repaints, and customer loyalty really took a hit. I worked for a Ford dealer for a time, and was in charge of coordinating repaints for the factory. Just some stray facts.

I've seen a lot of newer Rams where the paint is flaking off the hood, and my dad had paint come off the grille of his Dakota one day when he hand-washed it.
In any event, when paint comes off with vinyl, it's not your problem!

Thanks for the info.... I new it was the paint... But it still scared the daylights out of me.. Awesome idea with the masking tape I will have to remember that one. I don't want to get started and have someone all mad because there paint peeled.
