Don, you will not regret it. David uses one of those pencil things like you do. He doesn't holler at you much and I didn't see him hit anyone while here in Texas. Actually, David is so mild mannered and humble that you are almost afraid to ask a question for fear of hurting his feelings. His main statement is "Look up here at the big screen". And then he points at his monitor while trying to make a point, like his finger is being projected up on the screen.

David's in the middle of his Lodi workshop right now, so I'm anxious to hear reports on how it went in California.

If you have not guessed it by now, David is one of my heroes that I consider one of the greats in our business. One of the best parts of the workshop is his telling of how he got into the sign business and the steps he's taken to get where he is now.

Because David covers so much material, it is impossible to remember everything. Luckily, you get a manual and a CD so that you can review all the lessons. I'm certainly not a computer geek by any means, but I have already used a lot of what I learned last week. It would have taken me years to learn everything David taught us last week by simply trying to go through the manuals and self-help things.

End of commercial.

Edited for P.S. - If you can't bring a computer to the workshop, David and Susie bring along some extras with Photoshop already loaded.

I took some notes as we went along to help me remember some of the procedures. They are probably in the workbook, but I tried to put the steps in my own shorthand that I could understand.

There were a few little tricks that David had developed that I had not seen in the other manuals I've read. Since his instruction is geared to sign folks many of the manuals would not have covered them.

And, no, you can't use my notes. Well, maybe. Just send me a copy of those CD's and we will call it even.

Go for it, Raymond! Scanning tiny images and vectorizing is how I practiced when I was learning. [Eek!]

(Anybody who has had to vectorize a logo from a biz card knows I'm only half kidding)

Don, after completing the workshop in Lodi and learning layers of photoshop procedures, I inquired of Jim Moser if he learned anything. Jim has taken numerous photoshop clases and repeated some over the years. He has a dozen books that each approach a different facet or direction, and Jim enthusiastically said he learned a lot. Perhaps you might. I did. David is self taught and has some procedures that might differ from convention and be more geared to the needs of sign folks than the college courses teach.

We had eleven in our workshop and it went real smoothly. Prepare for many hours of sitting though. Tony Segale had a real comfortable room for us that was donated by the Chamber of Commerse. There were these well padded swivel rocking chairs that made a tremendous difference from fold up chairs.

The class moves along rather quickly and for me it seems like much to remember, but it's all there in the binder Butler's provide. Dave and Susie work well together, and providing them the opportunity to travel is a gracious thing for you to do. They should be doing Florida when the snow is knee deep in Indiana though.

Very well said Rick! I've been to a couple of PhotoShop seminars as well, and they don't even begin to compare with Dave's teaching style, not to forget the "Family" atmosphere that is a part of this workshop from beginning to end. It is a very simplistic approach that is geared toward what most of us do on a daily basis, as well as, a visual presentation of the possibilities that some folks may never have thought about. Can't forget to mention the hospitality that was provided buy Tony and his family. We had several folks in class who had taken the Denver Work Shop, and the work that they had accomplished, using Dave's technique, was simply Amazing! Dave also provided us with some additional techniques that were not in the book, but I'm sure will become part of it in the future. I think this is something that you will continue to benifit from for many years, and won't just become another book that collects dust on your shelf. Hope I can get a replacement CD when this one is worn out, because it is packed with many extras! Was it worth it? You bet it was, every penny and then some. What a humbling yet rewarding experiance...Thanks to the Butlers, Tony and his family, and the Lodi Chamber of Commerce. Robin [Thanks] [Applause]
