I often get asked by folks about how one might get into this business. It makes me smile. If they have to ask they don't get it.
It's mostly about hard work and perseverance. And especially its about passion.
So many folks have helped me through the years. I could never repay them all. But it gives me great pleasure in playing it forward when I can.
One of our former employees has gone on to do work similar to ours. It has her own very special flavor and style, but the influence of the time spent with our crew is obvious. Wendy did her share of influencing us too.
Her first large scale project is currently underway not far from where we are working in Edmonton, on the outskirts of town.
Last Saturday I had the pleasure of spending the day with Wendy and her husband Cory on this monumental sign. It felt kinda strange to work on her project... she was the boss and we did it her way. I had a great time!
She was so excited and enthused about her business. She was so pleased to have the success she had already experienced. We reminised about the great times we had enjoyed with a wonderful crew in the past. We caught up on family news and shared dreams for the future. We also discussed business, pricing, and tactics for dealing with customers. Sort of like a mini Letterhead meet.
We made great progress on the sign too.
Through the day the owner kept coming out and telling her of the huge positive reaction they were getting to the sign. As we progressed the reaction increased. Wendy's project even passed my critical test... a stranger came and took a picture of the sign before we half finished it.
It made me smile.
Today I heard the city newspaper was there to do a story. And late last night she had a visit from a city official from a neighboring village... they want her to do a monumental sign for them in the spring.
For Wendy the process of being successful has started. It started the first day she opened her doors. Her passion for the art and positive attitude will carry her forward and show in her work. Already busy, she will soon be in the position of being able to choose what she takes on and what whe lets pass. And she will make a good living doing what she loves.
I love to see others enjoy their craft with this type of passion! And I love it when they enjoy success too!

That's a great story Dan! Rather than being bitter that your ex employee ran off and started up on her own, you celebrate her success. And work with her to boot!
