except for cleaning do I need to do any other prep when lettering with varigated leaf?can I use copper one shot for the base??? This will be an inside sign for myself. [Thanks]

Hi Randy, are you going to be putting the leaf on the front or the back of the mirror? You will need to strip some of the mirror off to letter the backside.
I would suggest using a water based size such as Wunda-size or Aqua-size so it won't tarnish the leaf like oil size will. I also tear the edges of the leaf a little to help hide the lap lines between leaves. The colour differences and leaf lines are very noticeable if you don't. Guess how I learned that.
If you are gilding the surface of the mirror you can add a little copper 1-shot to oil size. It seems that the tarnishing from the size doesn't migrate through the leaf to the front. I have not used oil size and variegated leaf on clear glass to see the tarnishing, but have been told that it happens.
Call Pete Payne @ Canadian Signcrafters. He is very knowledgeable about this. I believe that he puts on a glass gilding course once in a while, when there is enough interest. I took one about 7 years ago. It was an amazing weekend!! I learned a lot.
