May have chance to buy a 2 year old used Edge 2, cutter and software. Any idea how much it would be worth? It's a 15 incher, and the owner's going to a wide format printer.

I could possibly venture a guess as to what my edge 2 is worth to me...
but asking what a "cutter & software" would be worth is like asking what you charge for "a sign"
If it is an Envision plotter & Omega 2.0 thenyou would have the best edge set-up out of what Gerber has to offer & the rest of the info to help guess its value would be its age & condition.
You can learn a few buttons to push that will tell you how much material has run through it, & you should print a large (sq. ft.) box of cobalt blue at 50% because this helps show possible printhead or clutch wear.

Bill, I also wanted to make sure you knew about the forum for edge users http://www.4edgetalk.com you could ask the same question over there & probably get more replies, though they will still be more able to guesstimate value if you do specify which cutter & software. My system cost me about $25K 2 years ago & theres no way I'd sell it for even 20K, but that's different because I still want mine... but I guess my point is that knowing how good I've cared for it, it's as valuable to me as the day i bought it, except it's almost due for a new printhead. You could also check if the former owner has maintained a service contract, if some time remaining on that would transfer to you or not, & ask if it has been serviced weather or not they could put you in touch with the service folks to get their appraisel of it's condition at that time.

How can you tell if you have print head wear or clutch wear? Just curious...my buddy has an Edge I use from time to time...and this information would be helpful if a problem arose.
What's a new printhead and or clutch cost? Thanks for the info.

Don't know if this will help or not......A while ago I asked a salesman from a somewhat local Gerber distributor what they'd give me for my (at the time) 3 year old EDGE2 and Envision 375. I was told $8k for the Edge2 and $2k for the Envision 375 PLUS I'd be responsible for shipping it to their home office.

If all is well, the halftone print will be a constant shade. If the printhead is showing signs of wear, there will be a "tire tread" pattern in a place or two or 3... as for the clutch, I had some symptoms that Gerber tech folks thought might be clutch "chattering" & said I should run this test & send it to them. My clutch was fine, but I guess some kind of "chattering" appearance would be a possible description of what to look for (whatever that looks like )
My Edge II is priceless! Especially with Envision 375 and Omega 2.0. Doug is right, that matched system is sweet.
Recently, Gerber was offering a package with Edge I, software and plotter for $16995 new. You can use this to negociate. I definatly wouldn't pay more than that for a two year old system. Most generally, we use Edge I resolution for most of our printing anyways.

Hey Gentleman -- I got the skinny on this now. I didn't realize what variables were at stake here, and I also don't know whether this machine will serve our purposes.
First -- this sign shop paid in the 31K range for an Edge 2 with the Envision 275 and lowest version of Omega (according to them) and they want between 18 - 20K. Don't know whether that's a good deal or not.
Second -- what's a reasonable expectation of longevity for vehicles. Around 75% of our work is vehicle related, the bulk of that is semi lettering and striping. Do clear coats extend the life of the prints for outdoor work. I'm sorry if this has all been rehashed before, but I've only been on this board around a year and I might have missed the discussion. Right now most of my designs are a minimun of three colors, and I airbrush fades on a lot of designs. The bulk of these trucks get traded within 5 years, the lettering is all vinyl or painted vinyl and the striping is paint. The striping goes with the truck and can be gone over when faded. Sometimes I will change the color of the striping for the next owver down the line.
My 2 youngest sons work for a large sign shop in another larger town and knowing the work I do, they think this might be something that would help out.

Bill - for what you do...you DEFINATELY need this machine.
Edge output is good "UP TO" 5 years without lamination....you can either print a clear Edge foil over the Edge print or cut a clear vinyl of the shape of your graphic and apply on top of the Edge graphic for additional protection (as far as wear and scratches go).
If you do a lot of airbrushing, fades etc...you the edge will be a big time saver for you...and produce re-producible results perfectly everytime.
I say..."Get it".

Hey Bill, 85% of my work is vehicles and I would definitely clear the prints. They say 3-5 yrs. but that is extreme in my opinion. Vehicles take a lot of abuse with salt from the roads, car washes etc. I have had good luck with frog juice as a clear coat. The u/v properties in it are very good. Chemical resistance is not that great. It is much easier to clear the prints than apply a film laminate. Mike
