First time on here so forgive any mistakes. Recently invested in a cnc router and am working on some projects involving carved out lettering and shapes from hdu or foam. What is the best procedure for painting in lettering and outer areas or indeed what is the best way of masking these off or can anyone recommend a good book on the subject

Hiya Kevin & welcome aboard. I haven't read any books on the topic but, I learned the old fashioned way with some twists. I assume you can use the same concept when it comes to routering. We would cut the blank to shape & finish it in our usual manner...seal, prime, & paint, etc. Once the paint was completely dry, we would apply some precut vinyl masks, weed out the lettering that needed to be carved & start carving. After all the carving was complete, we would paint and/or guild and remove the rest of the mask and have a completed sign. There's a recent post about using paint masks in a similar manner. Unfortunately, I can't find the post at the moment.
Havin' fun,

Kevin, try this on a sample HDU board............ prepaint the total blank with the finished paints. Apply a GOOD paint mask of your choice. Route out your graphics THROUGH the mask. Vacuum out the dust real good. Roll out the mask well with a rubber roller. Prime and paint the letters and graphics. Then remove mask. Very little touch-up will be required. If there is that little "flashing" around the edges of the graphics, it can be wetsanded with 400# sandpaper with very little damage to the background paints. Practice this a few times and you will be surprised at the time you will save in painting. I use this method as often as I can when sandblasting recessed letters and graphics in HDU.
oh, and WELCOME to LetterVille !!!!!!!!!!!!!
