Joe,

I got a call from some guy wanting some signs a few years ago. I did the usual asking about a design, file formats, etc. and he said he's getting something designed REAL CHEAP from an outfit like this and can have it in any format I want. I passed as I figure this guy is gonna want a sign as cheap (or cheaper) than his "design" was created on the cheapest materials, etc. and I just didn't want to deal with that bottom feeder.

I've decided that someone will ALWAYS beat my (& your) price and I just don't care to play that game.

I have seen this website, and have considered setting up an account.

I'm sure there are some hacks, but they are everywhere. Don't denounce them all, simply because they are marketing on the web.

A few of the designers are very good. A very quick search on the site turned up this designer's site. Very cool stuff, for some very impressive clients.

Did you actually Quote the "bottom feeder" on the sign and passed when he "cheaped" out?
I quote on what the client wants and will advise them of poor choices of materials for the application and will generally not execute the sign if I know it is going to lead to comebacks or problems for me
If I *did* do it , it would be with a disclaimer that the materials selected were not ideal and there would be no guarantee.

Should he already have a design that he has approved and likes , it is not my business , unless asked , to criticise. Personal taste is an inviolate thing.

Joe,
I actually signed on with those guys for chuckles about a year ago. Some of the jobs they sent were pretty cool (logo for a ranch in Texas, logo for a bike shop in Arizona, etc). The only catch was to become a "preferred artist", you had to pay a fee. Anyone who was "preferred" had there proposal sent to the client within 12 hours. If you weren't, they held your proposal for a certain amount of time (I don't remember how long). The jobs were usually based on an hourly rate and were usually pretty good to very good. The client stated what they thought the job should cost and how long they thought it should take. Most of them were pretty realistic. I sent in proposals for 4-5 of them over the course of a year (never got one though). Also some of the premium jobs were held for preferred artists only. I stopped responding and asked to be taken off the list.
