not that my 2 cents is needed or educated enough, but i do know people. in most cases our anger is toward ourselves and our own shortcomings. when a customer takes up precious time with ramblings,it is hard to take.money is hard come by for everyone, and most people want to spend it wisely. a sign is a very final, lasting purchase.it says who you are, what you are about, and does sell your business. patience is a virtue. last one we achieve in life,it seems.bob, take a breather, shut your eyes and gets some rest.someday all that is making you lose your inner calm will not matter.you seem like a good person. simplify your life, it will be ok.
quote:Often , you as an outsider to the industry you are being asked to give advice on , can see things clearly from a consumers point of view and can give some very good advice , even unsolicited
This quote caught my attention, because I can't count the times someone was using some trade -specific words I didn't understand in their short & sweet summary of the product or service they are trying to advertise.
I have usually asked many questions before I try to tell them anything, so by the time I have any suggestions for them, I do understand the product or service, but I let them know when they walked in saying what they wanted the sign to say... I didn't really understand what it meant because I'm not in their business... & neither are most of their customers.

Mayor Steve: Please remove me from your board. I see no reason to linger here in your little group. Your requirements for membership are not acceptable. I have no problem in giving my telephone number to any legitimate party that needs it. Posting it on the internet is not that. I have noticed an increase in spam since I joined this group and have no need to get telemarketers along with it.

Hi John, sorry to see your comments above. Welcome to the BB. This reply of mine has nothing to do with this thread, just a comment to you- please have some faith in this group and don't take adverse comments personally. Thousands of people read these posts, and a few reply to a few threads. Many more don't reply, but will later to some other question where their technical experience may be of real value. The scope of help available here is priceless, you only need to tap into it. Some threads do an about-face and become 'amusingly ridiculous' to an outsider, or more entertaining than the midday soapies, or so it may seem, but there is still value in a lot of the comments if you distil them. Re getting spam- well, touch-wood, but I've been here (posting & replying ) a little while, and have yet to ever get any spam from anywhere. If some were to come, I wouldn't go looking here for a source. Hopefully I'll continue to not get any. I've copped a few viruses & worms, but they would relate to someone else's email address book, I'd guess, not here. "You'll only get out of something what you're prepared to put into it" is an old saying. This site seems to go through phases of good gutsy technical info, then good marketing opinions, then something else, then it drifts off- it's only co-signies all contributing, generally as well as they can. Ask a good question, and you may get no replies, or you may get several- that's always the surprise, but don't be afraid to ask. Some posters are known for their sarcasm, intended or not. Others are genuinely helpful. Others are just having an off day/week, but it's temporary. I didn't mean this to be a sermon, just a comment to have some faith in this community with its oddities, and to give it another chance- I can't see it as a source for spam. Best wishes

Wow! This reminds me of the National Geographic Channel. You know, where a bunch of jackels form a pack and go after the wounded lion and rip his throat out.
When people start quoting other people's past words of wisdom in an attempt to discredit them - all the while trying to present themselves as superior business people shows an arrogance of immense proportions.
Is anyone in this forum a millionaire? I doubt it...and if they were they wouldn't need this forum for advice.
Now I don't know [John]...but he seems level headed. I don't recall him trying to drag anyone down the road from his car bumper. Why try and gut him from @$$hole to belly button with a dead deer antler?
Now, scurry along and find a post of me quoting someone in an argument so you can prove me a hypocrite...I almost guarantee you'll find one. Yes, I'm a recovering hypocrite...welcome to my club. [above copied from another post]
Regarding the original post: Bob, I think to be able and willing to offer advertising and marketing advice goes hand in hand with this trade.
I look at this as an asset. Let the customer be confident in what you know through education, experience, or gut feeling will help him sell his product.
Take away the customers problem, and insecurities and you make not only a friend, but a customer for life. That's my take.
Regarding the magnetic returning customer: That person was an enigmatic rare exception...in which case i'd say, "Who cares?" I'd laugh in his face and tell him to hit the road.
Offering a layout suggestion is just that...a suggestion.....nobody is twisting the customer's arm. You offer a sane layout, and they either accept it or not.
P.S. I'm with John on the phone number thing. I don't understand the need. There are too many nuts out there...and I know a few people here who consider me one.

I work with many types, some giving freedom that I feel comfy with. Some say that they are giving me some freedom and it bites my legs off when the process gets mired in their opinions to my creativity... over and over and over and over... that is when they become the "tell me exactly what you want on this" customer, and I make that look as good as possible. They are happy and I didnt have to waste time with them.
Now... as for John!
Yep, I dont see John being a problem here or not. I dont think his asking to be removed from the sites database was because of this thread, it was spam he started getting and the requirement to post his phone number. Many, especially those who do not trust the internet would do the same.
With some of the replies, which have been fairly harmless, were I a new poster, I would be cautious to provide my phone number because it doesn't seem needed to be used for things stated in this thread.
I say, welcome John, and well met. Sorry you got some spam from here, but I suspect that is the case ANYWHERE you post your email addy.
I personally like John's attitude much more than a certain other new poster I have seen come and go. Boy, one really rubbed me the wrong way, to the extent I didn't read anything that had their name on it... haha.
I like Nettie speaking up too... hehe.
I hope you keep visiting John. And again, sorry if you got spammed from visiting us.

I don't understand this fear of the internet. Especially when it comes to a community like Letterville.
We're a community of friends and business owners. Our contact info is listed in business directories, telephone directories and numerous other places. When we attend a trade show our contact information is available to all sorts of interested parties. What are you afraid of?
We have a fear too. In the past, we have discovered individuals posting here under assumed names. Their motives are not important, but it is our job to make sure legitimate users are getting honest information from honest people like themselves.
After 9 years at this job, you learn to recognise posts and people that just don't "smell right." If a search of that person and/or their shop reveals no such name or business, you have to be suspicious. Having a phone number to call is the best way to ensure we are listening to others that are truly interested in Letterheads and the ideals that drive the movement. A legitimate business should have no problem, and even appreciate our motives.
Those that have fears and/or disagree with this policy have a choice. Feel free to reap the benefits of what you can learn here, but refrain from posting.
This whole topic has run it's course. It's time to close it. If anyone wants to discuss our contact info policies, feel free to start a new topic on that subject.
