I received this message in email this morning, names removed to protect the innocent..
_______________
Since you are into automotive graphics and know a lot about the sales side of it, I thought maybe you could help me out a little. I am taking an online course for college (my major is computer graphics), and we have to make up our own business and then compare it to our competitors. So, basically what I need is the processes you guys use to create your graphics (machines, programs ect) and then the cost for such equipment. We are also suppose to compair Volume of sales per year. You dont have to give me exact numbers, but maybe just a ball park figure would work. Any help at all would be much appreciated. Thanks

Seems I've received emails in the past with similar messages but I always blew them off, figuring it was just someone wanting sources for everything without doing their own research. This time it's from an online acquaintance I've known a couple years so I can verify his schooling... I still can't help but wonder if this "Create your own business" bit is actually a part of the course or just a way to scope out what kinda profits are in the business before making the jump.

IT could be real. I worked with the University New Orelans bizz developement program and they sent over some students. In the end i got a realy good report on what the local area was doing. Also, they gave me a good general idea of what my competitors were doing price wise. I was not surprised cuz we all generally know what the others are doing. But i did find out I was not the highest as I thought.

Heh... would that I was in a mood, I would make up quite a bit of stuff here and a) make myself look REALLY good... or more likely b) make it look like there should be no way I would be able to stay in bizness. I would be creative on something like that. heh.

I'm glad you said that cause my gut told me to give him your number.
Actually, I just sent him links to a few websites and let him research for himself - sites like Gerber, Scanvec, CADLink, Summa.. you know, the ones with the more expensive equipment.

A good friend asked me to get involved with his college marketing course project last summer. A "product", although fictional, that he needed a packaging design for. I drew it up and we set aside a night for discussing how to market it effectively and what kind of customer base he would be trying to reach. All hypothetically.
It's was definitely a part of his course studies and, in all, I had fun working on the ideas with him. I got quite an education from him on how to do better marketing for my own business as well.
I'm sure that this teaching technique is not uncommon.
In my vocational high school, our teachers often took in "live' jobs, like paste up and layout for local businesses, and the like. One of those projects was to design a new foyer for the entrance to the restaurant the culinary students had, which served lunch daily to the public. My design was chosen, I learned to work with the arcitectural students on the final construction details, and my sister did some of the masonry work for it. It's still there to this day 25 years later.
Just thinking... Rapid

Fine with me Mike... It's been freaking raining here since about an hour after they finished the dirtwork Tuesday and I'm starting to get cranky. I was looking for someone to unleash on. This just saves me from calling you!
