I want to flame my El Camino with the natural looking flames that seem to be popular. No one here in Winnipeg has seen them other than in magazines.
I am having a difficult time finding reference photos.
Does anyone have some they can send me or point me in the right direction?
Thanks muchly!

Reference photos? Of realistic flames? How about set something on fire and take some action photos. I'm pretty sure that's what Mike Lavalle does with his.

Also, check out Mike's website- www.killerpaint.com

He's the king of realistic flames!

I have done those, I ended up with the best results by doing all the flames in black & white (black background), getting everything the way I want it, then shooting transparent uro candys over them to get the colors. Colors were very intense, showed great detail. I have no idea if this is how the other folks do it, I just wasn't getting the right look with solid colors.

An interesting story behind the real look of Mike Lavalle's "Pyrotechnics" came at Joey Hutsons meet about 2 years back.

This is the way I recall hearing it...

Seems Rhonda (Mikes significant other) awoke in the middle of the nite to reflections of fire in the bedroom...near panic insued but she managed to escape the house only to find Mike in the back yard burning newspaper in the birdbath and taking pictures of the flames with his 35 mm camera, so he could study the pictures for replication.

Mike has since been forbidden access to the bird bath and tied to the bed after 10 pm to assure a good nites sleep without visions of hell in the middle of the nite.

Isn't artistic license a wonderful thing?

I've always wanted to ask Mike how many pictures he has taken of "fire" to replicate "it".

Ed, great work and I especially like the ribbon type waves on the black vehicle.

Monte, good story, I always wondered how he came up with that and never asked him.

Hi Luke,
I guess I've painted more realistic fire than just about anybody around and the way I do it is I start off with orange and then proceed to use my candy colors, first candy red then back to orange then candy tangerine then chrome yellow followed by candy yellow then a whit/yellow mixture followed by more candy yellow then finally a touch of white in the hot spots. after I'm done with this I'll usually add some purple pearl to the ends for a nice finishing touch. the best reff's I have for fire I took myself at night.....just not in the birdbath anymore [Wink] hope that helps. Thanks for the tips!
Mike, great work.
I will try the candy paints and play around.
I actually did a toilet seat with the 'natural' looking flames (everyone gets a flaming one now and then) and it turned out ok but, this was based on a small picture from a magazine.
I appreciat all the advice from everybody!

G'day Luke, shame you didnt wunna do these flames a couple years ago, i spent a month in winnapeg with a mate of mine who is also a aussie and I would of loved to flame your "ute" [Smile]
While there I met with a bunch of winnapeg signies ( cosmic ray renooy, jeff gilfex, barry chochinov, peter tetrault, dave fraser and alan senkiw) All great guys, we went out a couple times all of us, it was a blast. Jeff owns "brushfire signs" and wanted to flame his van with natural flames but not sure if he did it yet. I did go there and show him the process.
Have you seen the mural on the side of a house out in west st. paul near a set of lights with a bear etc on it? I did that. (plus 3 other murals)
If ya get the chance call into the Rivercrest hotel and say G'day to my mate smurf and deanne. (deanne and her family own the rivercrest)

I miss the folk up there, i had a blast!

Have a Alberta spring for me.

cheers and good luck with it.

Mikes flames are the best!! I'm proud to call him a "mate"

rod..
