I have an opportunity to do another piece for a client I've worked with recently. This other project is for a Bed & Breakfast and is in a turn of the century home. So, the question is do you try to keep the same style or image if the signs are relatively close in proximity of each other, or would you address each one independently? I would prefer to design something more "antique" looking rather than the one I just did for her entry for the horse farm.
If you have an opinion, I'd like to hear where the line is on "consistent" image or style where it applies and when it's not the rule!

These are two seperate business' right? Sears and JcPenny are real close at the mall but the signs are different. or Is this a bed and breakfast for horses? Is it a bed and breakfast dude ranch?
I don't know what the "rules" are but in this case "I" would try to make them not similar styles ... given this situation to ponder.

Does it say that on the entrance to the horse farm too? Boy, not wise planning on their part huh? I like your antique sign idea but would reeallllyyy play down the "action farms" part on the sign.
What does the other sign look like? I've seen farm signs carved and guilded with pictorials ... also seen spraypaint on raw plywood nailed to a tree

Mark, On the Portfolio Page go back 5 days and you can see a picture. It's under the Action Farms post...
That's kind of my question though, Action Farms in it's current design is used on business cards and the front entrance sign. Now with the edition of the bed and breakfast, the current design doesn't go with the look or feel of a bed and breakfast and the historical structure of the home. I wish she would come up with a different name for it and my problem would be solved! So, I'm trying to use her name Action Farms but take it out of it's current look and make something more appropiate for the bed and breakfast and forget the one look company this and that idea. I'm just trying to protect her basic design principles for recongnition, but I don't know that I need too.......whew!

Hiya Chuck, If it was my client, I would try to steer them to a different look altogether for the B&B... more design fees ; ) However, it really depends on what the client wants. If they want to keep the look consistent, I would, at least, suggest a different color scheme for each business. And like Mark, on the new sign, less emphasis on the Action Farms & more on the bed & breakfast.
Havin' fun,
Checkers

Hi Chuck. When I initially read your post, I didn't realize these two businesses were on the same property. I said to myself - "it's clearly GOT to be a totally different image". Then my mind trailed on to add "unless it's part of the same building, or inside a complex that has a unified theme".
After reading the replies, the latter is obviously the case. I have seen the Action Farms sign, and I agree, it's not an ideal image for a B&B - BUT, it is 'part' of the Action Farms grounds. I think your challenge is to utilize enough of the Action Farms identity to make the connection obvious. That could be as little as keeping the word Action Farms in it's original typeface and maybe some elements from the panel shape.
Ok, after reviewing the panel again, this may not really be that hard. I'd mimic the panel shapes and colors, make the Action Farms logo smaller and just let the big message "Bed and Breakfast" dominate the center. Don't laugh at this thumbnail, it's got possibilities. I'll let you work out the details.
Another tact would be to rotate that sucker 90 degrees to a vertical orientation and stack all the copy.
