I am terrified of Sharks and Tornados, not snakes, bugs, spiders, lightning, germs, heights or any of that...

(Jaws! generation). I love the beach but have the adrenaline pumping whie out there and get the shakes when I come in, sit and pop open a coldbeer, then do it all over again.

Secondly, I have been scared of tornadoes since I was a small child... Dad said one went over the house when I was maybe 2 and blew the windows into the house. That might be why even today, I hear the wind blowing, I am wide awake at night.

Think both are for the same reason for me. You can see neither coming, tornado at night while asleep and shark when you are bobbing up and down looking across that vast nothing that is ocean... and POW!!!

How about you?

Hi!
My house has been hit by a tornado twice now, but I am not afraid of tornadoes. I don't find the ocean very inviting...just thinking about all the lost drowned souls, mysterious sea creatures, & medical flotsam & jetsam floating around in it creeps me out, but I do not fear the ocean. Spiders, snakes, and crawly things, well,I think they are interesting and sometimes even beautiful.
What truly scares me is going up a flight of steps (in the dark) that have no kickboards...anything could reach out and grab your ankle.
Also, for as long as I can remember, I dive into my bed at night...you never know what is lurking beneath it. Even dust bunnies can be terrifying! And I won't let my feet hang off the couch whilst watching a scary movie...
I'm not weird! HAHA
love- JILL
I also fear rednecks who pull up in a primered pick-up, saying they want a "purty" sign...could I look at Cousin Bubba's layout? [Roll Eyes]

the fear that grips me the hardest is when the phone rings, and it is jilly. she is laughing this evil laugh.... she quietly says." i did something really bad"..... my toes turn to ice, my heart stops in the grip of terror, and my stomache starts to grind with the burning sensation... "oh,no, not again". [Eek!]

Spiders.

Doesn't matter what size or shape they are in, they totally creep me out. I don't mind snakes, bugs or other crawly things but I can't deal with spiders for some reason.

Besides snakes, I'm afraid of bees & trailers during thunderstorms.

I've always been afraid of bees and in the last 10 years, I've become allergic to them.

The trailer thing during thunderstorms is a stupid "when I was a kid" story.

Meeting a log truck on the highway loaded with long logs. Pulpwood is O.K. but the logs scare me. I have a fear of the binder snapping and the logs rolling onto me. Stupid I know, but the fear is there. Maybe I had a dream years ago or some one made a voodoo doll and stuck it under their firewood.

Heights... although, I'm getting better. I have to physically hang on to someone while up high, otherwise I have this overwhelming urge to get back to the ground... whichever way is quickest (those of you who are truly phobic about heights will know exactly what I mean!)

I don't really freak out over critters, well, except maggots. I can sorta deal with them on dead things, but on something still alive... TOTALLY gives me the heebee-jeebees!! EEWWWW just thinking of it gives me the creeps!

One of the gals at work is totally phobic over little furry critters, like rats, mice, hamsters and especially ferrets. Makes doing adoptions kinda interesting with her... she'll take care of the paperwork, but one of us has to get the animal ready to go home!

Some great replies.

I've probably got a number of them, but here are a few:
Working under cars that aren't REAL WELL supported. Seems like every year I read of someone dying when a vehicle fell on them. I use very large pieces of wood,(logs hewn square) or heavy duty jackstands.

This one I'm serious about, not just taking an opportunity to "blather". In the U.S. we're losing our bill of rights. As we speak, the campaign finance reform bill has taken away freedom of speech, and the patriot act has allowed more govt intrusion. Next, or soon, will be laws against "hate speech".
It's as depressing as it is fearful.

Haha Perkins.

I also forgot, I have an irrational fear of grating. Another one of those stupid "when I was a kid" stories. Last spring at the power plant, I went on the afternoon walk-down with the safety man. Took the elevator to 13th floor, got out & everything from there to the ground was grating..floors, stairs. I managed to keep myself together til we got to the ground. I then told him of my fear and that I didn't think about the grating til we got off the elevator. I refer to that day as my "shock treatment for my irrational fear of grating".

NEEDLES.....for some reason I don't like them. I've hit my thumb numerous times with a hammer, cut my thumb half off with a lawnmower blade, and I would rather do either of them again as to get stuck with a NEEDLE.

Can you tell...I'm all thumbs. he he

after extended periods of rain where there is flooding...i hate going over bridges and seeing how dark, muddy, and high the river is screaming downstream....one time a neighbor called me to check on her house while she was out of town...it's the middle of winter...20 below and in the evening...when i opened the door i could hear water...well the pipes burst and it was spewing everywhere...the house was dark so i was headed for the basement to shut off the water main...when i opened the basement door and stepped down to turn on the light i was horrified to see the water was just about up to the step i was on...it was so creepy...things floating around...gave me the willies!!
so there ya go....

I was doing just fine with the black widows around here - there have been tons of them for some reason but they are outside - and then two days ago I walked into my 6 year old daughter's room and there's a great big one hanging above her CD player. Scared me half to death. A black widow bite hurts like a son-of a-bitch (so I've been told) and will make the average adult VERY, VERY, VERY sick but is normally not fatal. For a very skinny 6 year old, it's a different ball of wax.

Needless to say, I dispatched her to the depths of hell with one good swat of my sandal and last night I sent 6 of her friends down to join her.

Oh, and I forgot to mention the EARTHQUAKE we had last night. Those are kinda fun though, as long as they don't hurt anyone or break anything. Just enough of a jolt to remind us that Mother Nature likes to mess with us. [Cool] I'm laying there on the couch watching a tape of THIRD WATCH from Monday night and I heard this loud roar and felt it rumble up from underneath. The window above me rattled something fierce and then it was over.

My biggest fear? I don't know that I'd call it a fear but I can't stand enclosed spaces. Stuff like elevators I'm okay with because I know I'm getting off but there's NO WAY I can sleep with the bedroom door shut or work in an office with a closed door. I have french doors in my house and I keep them wide open if I'm home.

What I'm REALLY afraid of...

Having a "60 Minutes" camera crew show up in my shop [Eek!] Morleyphobia

18 wheelers driving six inches behind me at 70 mph...at night...during a snowstorm! Bumperphobia.

A wave of signpainters going into semi retirement.. and all moving into my neighborhood. Brushophobia.

Not enjoying what you do for a living. Carreradragophobia.

The shortest of the 6 drunken golfers that just walked into the bar. He's usually the one who starts the trouble, and his buddies will always rally to his cause, regardless of how stupid it is. Poloshirtruntophobia
