I just received a warning from a friend in Europe, and upon checking my computer found some infected files. Unfortunately it spreads over the adress book, and all I can say, is that I apologize for not having it emptied long ago. I sent the warning to everybody that was in there, but many messages have been returned, So I think it might be necessary to enter a short, personal message in the subject box, rather than calling it Virus Alert.

EDITED, after finding out the truth (read next post). Sincere apologies.

Jdbgmgr.exe file hoax
Reported on: April 12, 2002
Last Updated on: July 19, 2003 02:47:09 AM

Symantec Security Response encourages you to ignore any messages regarding this hoax. It is harmless and is intended only to cause unwarranted concern.

Type: Hoax

This hoax, like the SULFNBK.EXE Warning hoax, tries to encourage you to delete a legitimate Windows file from your computer. Jdbgmgr.exe is the file to which the hoax refers, and it is the Microsoft Debugger Registrar for Java. The Jdbgmgr.exe file may be installed when you install Windows.

And do NOT contact everyone!!

Whenever I get a message like this, I check snopes.com. They have a page devoted to hoaxes, with the appropriate links. I have never received a legitimate warning. I know people who have compromised their computer's capabilities by following through on some of the "warnings" given.

A real key is when the message says something like it "created havoc on Wall Street... as reported on CNN", making the recipient think he missed it because he wasn't watching his cable. The real virus problems, such as Melissa and the recent worms unleashed are reported on all the media. You cannot miss the message because it is all over the news. "Havoc on Wall Street" will not be the exclusive story of one media outlet.

Leave this post Lottie. I am glad I checked it before deleting the files and passing the message on. Send a second message to everyone in your address book to let them know it was a hoax. Don't feel bad - how is a person to know all this. [Dunno]

I did send a second message to everybody, and I edited and deleted the instructions, because somebody might not read the rest of the post (you never know)
Usually I'm careful with warnings like this, but coming from a trusted friend with good computer knowledge, I didn't question it.
And I do feel bad, because some, like myself might have gone through with the removal of the files. There is instructions on how to re-install them though.

I'm just not sure now whether I need them or not.
