I have opportunity to get an older Gerber Sprint plotter for my son in college. What is necessary to get this to be driven from a PC with a sign program other than Gerber's?

You need a card like Cadlinks Fastboard that goes inside the console that comes with the plotter. This cards accepts ordinary HPGL data via a serial port (9pin)with a null modem cable at 9600 baud/8 data/1 stop/No Parity xon/xoff or hardware handshake.
Then any computer (mac/pc),and any program that can generate HPGL , can talk to the machine. The 1 thing you need to do is to make sure your page size in whatever program you use is less that 32 inches. You can cut as long a job as you like, so long as you send it in at most 32 inch chunks.
If you dont have the console, you could inquire about a Cadlink Power Driver which i basicly a replacement of the console. Its a stand alone box with a FastBoard inside. These are build only to order so i doubt there are any in stock.
There where other card makers but i am not sure if they are still around.
