In the last half an hour, I've received about 6 of the "Microsoft" virus e-mails, all from Lettervillians. Looks like someone has been infected again.

If anyone gets the message that looks like it is from Microsoft sending a security patch, DELETE it! DO NOT RUN THE ATTACHMENT!! [Mad]

Thank you Terry,

I just received 7 emails from "Microsoft" but some of them seemed strange. I was leary about running the patch install and came here instead.

Geez, I love this place!

Yep. I just got hit with a dozen of them. Like the previous big virus, this one seems to have originated from the newsgroups.

yep, got it here too. The give away here is that Microsoft will not send you an unrequested file for security updates and then ask you to install it.
I also got a few other messages saying that my email account at whatever did not go through. There was a malicious attachment there too.

Havin' fun,

I've been fortunant so far, & have never been infected... knock on wood. I did implement a good technique that someone here suggested last go round. Even though I keep pretty well updated on the AIV stuff, & I tend to be pretty watchful about even looking at mysterious emails, The technique was to change a setting in Outlook Express.

Go to view, select layout, in the bottom half where it says "preview pane" you can uncheck the box that offers you a preview pane. This will stop the message from being "looked at" by mistake when you just want to select something so you can delete it. I'm not sure if, or when just looking at something could be as bad as opening an attachment, but these bugs seem to be getting worse all the time, so I am very happy to have made that change & have the luxury of deleting things without having to view the little bastards at all.

One loophole in that method I discovered though, is that if you have a list of new emails & you start by finding one you do want to read, you double click & it opens that message in a new window. If after reading it you want to delete it, when I clicked on a delete icon in the OE toolbar, the next message in my list of new messages automatically opens up in that window, so now after reading a message I close the window, and delete it from the list instead of in its own window.

Thanks for that preview pane tip Doug. Just made the change.

I too have been sent this latest virus a dozen times in the last 48 hours.

Fortunately I use www.mail2web.com to list all and delete any e-mails on my server without having to download. It's a free site, and you can access your e-mails from any computer in the world.

Also, with all the spam around, it is definitely a quicker way to delete it. The "Microsoft" Virus stands out like a sore thumb on the list. Sender or subject includes the word "Microsoft" or "MS" and is about 154k message.

Australia has just passed "anti-spam" laws, but unfortunately it looks like they can only be applied to spam originating here.

Just some thoughts while pondering what ever happened to Harry Lumley...

Since most of the virus' are being written to exploit the the weaknesses of Outlook and OE, wouldn't it be better to use one of the many excellent e-mail programs out there?

What possible joy could someone derive from ruining other people's stuff? These people would probably not key the side of your car just to be stupid but think nothing of writing these virus programs to wreak absolute havoc on the public.

Don't you just love pistacchio frozen custard in a twist on a regular cone?

On to another thought wave...

Good point Bruce....About the e-mail client choices...Not the pistachio custard part.

I always have, and always will use Eudora..Not because of the virus situation, but because I like it.

I also have NO entries in an address book, hence no way that a virus could mass e-mail from my address book.
