Hey thanks for all the ideas on my bleeding mask troubles. I was glad to have a few back-up plans up my sleeve in case my first choice didn't work. What I did was go with the idea of painting the same color as what I was masking off first, in my case red. That way the bleeding that I anticipated would be just red on red (all 1-shot), but would seal up the seam. I painted the red first last night with a foam brush... not too excessively wet. This afternoon I painted the black outline & immediately peeled the mask watching for any threat of tearing into my red base & peeling up my painted outline. It went almost perfect! No threat of anything peeling & only the tinyest bit of black bleeding under.
Here is a shot of the results:
For those that missed it, the failure in question was my first attempt at part of this HDU job when my black outline came out like this:
*edit* oops damn pics got transposed

Looks good. What was the shop temperature while it was drying?

last night I painted it around 11pm. It was probably in the 55 - 60 range at night. By this morning that part of the shop probably got up to the 70's at least.

thanks Joe, I am very thankful for my good fortune.
I still had some fear going into this solution, but did that one letter & had to run get the camera & fill in my family here.
Now I did the rest of the first sign with equally exceptional results. I have to put down the red on the second sign tonight because I wanted to be sure I had a good solution before moving forward on both at once.
I was able to buy a full weeks delay in my install committment because the new store is also having to bump back their opening date for their own reasons.
