I have a contract to do all the signs for the local football and baseball fields. In the past I have used sintra, but have seen the cumulative effects of UV causing brittleness, making it totally unviable. I have used some coroplast too, but I am afraid it is going to suffer a similar fate. Is there any comparably priced lightweight rigid substrate that would work for this? I would rather not use banners, if I can help it. What are others using? Thanks in advance for any and all advice!

tamus, i do a field right across the street from my home. i do coro's 32" x 48"(get 3 signs from 1 sheet of coro) and i put gromets in each corner. you need to educate the people at the ball park and tell them these are temp sign, and not ment to be left on the fence forever. here they put em up at thr begining of baseball season, when its over they take down the signs and save for next season. here they also have a football field and i do signs for them. ive seen some fields here that they do a full 4' x 8'. when i was in sarasota, someone donated a large quantity of steel blanks, and they would bring me the blanks and i would paint them. also i got the board of this field to raise the price of the logoed/artwork signs from $15 to $25(added to regular sign price)the person paying for the sign pays the $25.....they still make their money on the signs and i make more.......

Hey Tasmus- I use .040 aluminum (if ya can pronounce it) it's about $39/sheet fer a 4x8 and it holds up great- I have 9 year old hand-lettered ones as well as 5 year old vinyl ones still up. Yeah, they have some dimples, but they're in a damn ballfield! I've seen folks use banners, too, but they just don't look as snappy. Love- JILL

Hiya Barry, It depends on what the client can afford and how long they need to last. I've done them on opaque coroplast, banner, 1/2"mdo and .063 - .080 aluminum. The coroplast and banners were disposable, but, aluminum and mdo can be re-lettered. I used vinyl on aluminum and painted mdo.
Havin' fun,

Barry, check with your local builders supply. I buy 1/8" fiberglass in 4x8 here. I think it's made for use in baths and showers, but it sure works great for signs also. No more expensive than the aluminum and it won't dent.

Ya gotta ask the customer/ballpark what it is they want. If it's going to change 3 times a season, then definitely coro. Even if it's just getting one season out of it, coro might work out. If it's going to be permanent, then I like the aluminum idea that everyone else is putting forward.
No use selling them aluminum though if it's going to be changed all the time!...
