Hiya 'heads,
I'm looking for local travel information on Las Vegas.
My better half and I (and perhaps as many as 20 others) are planning a trip out there for the second week in March, probably the 9th thru the 12th. The main reason for booking these days is, from what I was lead to believe, the first week in March is crazy and should be avoided because of the Nascar races.
Since this will be my first trip to Vegas and one day is already booked, I'll be crunched for time.
So, if you have a limited amount of time to visit, where would you go first?
Also, any weather information for that time of year, places to avoid, etc. would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Checkers

Lake Mead and Hoover Dam.
If your in a driving mood, you can head west towards Barstow and there is a little tourist trap called "Calico Mine" and if ya head a bit more west you can try to find Si Allen

Oh and there is Area 51

Oh and I forgot the most important thing.....

The Casinos!

Gotta check out Fremont Street with the overhead video screen/canopy

and if your looking for "entertainment". I suggest the "White Horse Saloon" $5.00 membership fee but its worth it.

Nellis AFB, home of the "Thunderbirds"

and plenty of other tourist traps that love to take your money.

Oh and the food buffets in the hotels

most of all, HAVE FUN!

Brian; (1)- bring sunglasses. It's the pretty time of year in March, alittle windy, but nice. Temps shouldn't be over 80-90 then.
(2)- bring plenty of film, there's tons of stuff here of interest to a "head". First you must go thru the Paris, it's chocked full of Mark Otis and Joe Broxterman's work, some mighty fine sign work. The Forum shops at Ceasars have a ceiling w/airbrushed clouds and such that I did. The strip is full of exciting sign work.
(3)- the normal spots to go to, dam, red rock, grand canyon, valley of fire, etc:
(4)- take my number and call if you have a problem here. (702-647-6600)
(5)- bring a smile, it's going to get used a lot, and prepare for the experience of your life. Like roller-coasters? got you covered. Like golf? that too.
(6)- oh yeah, bring an appetite, best eating anywhere. And affordable too!!!!

There is so much to see and do but if you are only going for 5 days I would definately take one day to see Lake Mead and Hoover Dam. Take the "hard hat tour."
We stayed at the MGM Grand and would recommend it.
The Blue Man Group at the Luxor is a great show.

Do you want to stay in Vegas? or are you up to venturing out of the immediate area for a day trip?

There's plenty of things to do and see within Vegas: The Stratosphere Tower (like the space needle in Seattle, except it has a rollercoaster that wraps around the top), The Eifel Tower at the Paris Hotel, New York NY which has a scale model of NYC with rollercoaster, Freemont Street, the incredible fountain display/show at the Bellagio, the volcano at the Mirage Hotel, the Pirate Battle show in front of Treasure Island, the boat tour, arcade, and laser light show *inside* the Luxor Hotel (Egyptian Pyramid).

Those are either the free or rather inexpensive things to do.. now for the other stuff..

If there are kids in the group, there's game arcades - adults would enjoy these too: a carnival style arcade at the Circus Circus, Gameworks right on the strip (Steven Spielberg designed this place if that gives you any idea of the caliber of this joint, Virtual Reality, video games, extreme video games, rock climbing wall, even has a full service restaurant and serve alcohol), The Excalibur Hotel has a Medieval themed carnival midway, the MGM Grand has all kinds of virtual reality and video games, and the New York, New York has midway games, laser tag, the rollercoaster, and coin operated video games.

Can you tell I'm a game nut?? [Smile]

There's lots of shopping too, if any of the ladies are into that kinda thing. Guys might enjoy it as well because the malls on the strip are amazing, total eyecandy: The Forums at Caesar's Palace, Le Boulevard at Paris Hotel, the Grand Canal inside the Venetian (indoors, built like Venice complete with canals, gondola rides, street performers, chirping birds, etc), and the Showcase Mall which is right on the strip, includes the Gameworks arcade, the M&M Store (yes that's m&m's candies), the Coca Cola store (there's a giant Coke bottle and monster m&m's on the facade of the building, can't miss it!)

Now for showtime - Honestly I've only seen one show in Vegas, it was years ago but I still have the soundtrack. [Smile] It was the "Mystere'" show by Cirque du Soleil, and it is simply an amazing show. It's only too bad they take a 5 month break starting in January cause it's a must-see. There's also "SickFreak and 'Roid" with their tigers at the Mirage hotel, Blue Man Group at the Luxor, and *ack* Celine at Caeasar's Palace.
There's also a number of other smaller shows around Vegas but because they change all the time you'll just have to get there and see what's on all the billboards.

If you like going to clubs, there's the Palms Resort where they have a dance club called "Rain", everyone says it's the hottest thing in Vegas.. which in "dance club speak" that means it's most likely because it's the newest club.. [Smile] Also at the Palms is "Skin", an outdoor pool/nightclub.

About 45 minutes from the strip is the Hoover/Boulder Dam. I'm not sure if they still have the tours of the *inside* of the dam with the new security, but if they do that's definitely something to check out. You actually take an elevator down into the face of the dam (inside the concrete) then through tunnels into the generator rooms.. then they take you through another tunnel which has a glass wall at the end, looking right into one of the giant spillways.

There are also helicopter tours from Vegas to the Grand Canyon.

If you're up for a day trip, 2.5 hours south of Vegas is my town, Lake Havasu City where the London Bridge now calls home.. not much else here to see but it is a beautiful area. [Smile]

Weather in March is hit and miss.. it could be sunny and warm (70's or 80's) or it could be cloudy and cool (60's or 70's and windy). March is actually the end of the "rainy" season out here, which means it probably won't rain but if it does it won't last more than a couple hours. [Smile]
Bring short sleeves and jackets, shorts and pants. It's usually too warm for sweaters or sweatshirts when outside in the sun, so you'll want something you can take off and carry, then put bacl on if you end up in a shady area. At night you'll definitely want some pants as it drops into the 50's.
