Sorry Mike,
My Bullshark catfish died a few years back. Never replaced ole Freddie. Used to lay in bed an watch him as I went to sleep. He was pretty much always asleep at that time of night, or seemed like it, was kind of relaxing. Was about eight inches long, was about fourteen years old I guess. Kinda funny how we get attached to critters, eh? Friend of mine used to raise Black Widows.

(man gets chills up spine!)

That's a tough one. I have to say you are a fine person to see the magnificence in small and helpless creatures that give us so much joy in our lives. Sorry about your loss, Michael.

I like to see big fish in the aquarium like Oscars. A muskelunge would be really nice. Something I can actually see from across the living room. Nothin' doin'. The wife wants the little teeny weeny guppies and stuff you have to get right up to the glass to see.
Sorry bout yer fish Mikey. [Frown]

I'm sorry for your loss Mikey. I lost a couple when I moved up here. It really upset me for awhile, I missed relaxing with them before I went to bed. See you in chat tonight.

Most people don't get the charm of goldfish. Gold fish are freaks, they hardly breed true at all. If you breed two of the same sort even if they have very strong lines, only something like 25% will even be that sort. Most will be "Feeders". If left alone within 7 generations even the finest of them will just be brown carp. They are damn near man made. with a stunning history of husbandry in the far east, going back to the earliest records and artwork. They are special each one. They can teach us things we should all learn about ourselves and each other, not to mention the calming effect and the just cool looks!

Sorry for your loss! But do give another little freak a good home! [Frown]

My wife loves animals & all creatures so much, we have over a 100 guppies, 4 Betas, 1 turtle, 4 birds, 2 dogs & literally 100's of plants she has cared for for years. She constantly keeps the fishbowls spotless by swapping them to clean algea. The main bowls have covers, but the temporary bowls she uses while cleaning do not. a few days ago, she went in the kitchen and sadly mentioned that one beta had jumped out of the bowl. It wasn't quite dead yet, but was dead shortly thereafter. She has lost many pets, but even this fish produced a sadness in her voice causing me to be reminded that this sensitivity to life & things of true importance like her family, grandkids, etc. is what attracted me to her. She is not vain or trendy, & not concerned with social standing or idle gossip, but she loves life & one can not help but appreciate that.

While I'm avoiding my work... another pet story... She has been trying to raise Love Birds. The first pair did not survive our 3 years living in my shop. I don't know if paint fumes played a part, but one just keeled over one night. Later the other flew away when the cage was not latched right. Her next female, like the last one, always laid eggs... she tried to find a possible mate, & ended up getting a mated pair. They lived in a cage side by side with the single female, but no eggs. Finally after a long wait the new female was ready to lay an egg, but couldn't get it out. The vet told her on the phone that oil might help. A little castor oil didn't work, a little more caused some convulsions resulting in the bird slowly dieing in her hand. That was very sad. The male had been introduced to the single female in the other cage when she first bought them, but it seemed they only wanted to fight. After the newer female had died, & her mate was always crying, Linda put their cage doors together & we watched the visits start. By the next day we had a happy couple & the nesting & mating business was soon to follow. Maybe now she will get the baby birds she hopes for to give her grandkids.

OK, gotta work now.

Saltwater tanks are the coolest. the types of fish and plants are amazing. Unfortunately, the work keeping them up is significantly more than the fresh water variety.

Boone, I feel bad for you. Your just a sign guy, too.

I have had many many goldfish over the years... they have much more 'personality' than other tropical fish... sort of like a dog versus a cat.

But one I had grew from a little 2inch fish to near a foot long in a 30 gallon tank. He was a calico fantail. He survived a heater malfunction that killed all my other fish, diseases, all sorts of medication, getting stuck in a hollow log and a snail eating his tail off to the quik (grew back in a year or so). He lived with me throughout college and after. I had him for 8 years before he got too sick to make it anymore.

It is funny ... he would watch me as much as I watched him.

When he died, i took rest of my fish and sold them to the local pet store... he freaked out when he saw the variety i was bringing him.

Not sure how to link a pict.. but on my website is a section of a drawing I did of my 'old man'.

Yeah, they do have personality... never bothered me when my tropical fish died, but when one of my goldfish did, it was disappointing.

Get you a new one. [Big Grin]

I just noticed our goldfish, the only one of his species in the tank, has his tail vertebrae out of alignment. Looks like he was tailended by a truck....accordioned so to speak. Don't know how it got that way. Swims like his rudder is stuck toward the starboard side.

We had some bream, chinkapins, willow bream, speckled catfish, freshwater shrimp, snails, blennies, crappie and stuff which we caught down at the creek and put in the aquarium. Some of them were bluenosed shiners of which one was the male with the actual blue nose. Beatiful fish. Some were common shiners.

One of the shiners had his tail fin completely nibbled off by the other fish. They would chase him around mercilessly till there was nothing left but a stump. Instead of his former 200HP Mercury he was reduced to a low-speed trolling motor. He never gave up though, and his tail fins eventually grew back completely.
