I have always used Microtek scanners and the scanwizard software that comes with them is plenty good with useful options.
Problem is I bought an all in one solution HP copier/scanner/fax etc.(D135) and the software stinks.
I can't even scale the output to higher percentages.

Is their a substitute driver or software that will work with this? Silverfast makes one and another company makes one called Artcopy.

Any others?

David,

I just went through a similar thing, My scanjet 6300 died and the software on newer scanners from HP was very limited to working with b&w text and or graphics, I went to the Silverfast web site and checked under HP oly to find they stopped supporting HP scanners at the 6300C.

I'm not sure if they supported any all-in-one machines.

I now run an Epson 3170 perfection scanner and the software is fantastic for just that.

I hear Silverfast is the number one program for scanning but its not cheap.

I have a couple of customers using HP and Lexmark Multi Function Units, I don't recall the model numbers because the manufacturers seem to change them on a weekly basis but the software remains fundamentally the same.
The software seems to be designed for the average home user, so the authors try to make it a step by step process for Joe Citizen to scan images and save them to an album, perhaps if they're feeling adventurous the user might try and upload them to a server.
If you look beneath the surface of the software there are plenty of options available, you might just need to experiment.
On the up side, the print quality of your digital pictures should be excellent because that seems to be the forte of these machines.

I STILL believe the HP 4C scanner is the best all-around scanner ever made!

Umax isn't writing drivers for their older scanners either. At least for Mac OS X.
I have a Powerlook II that still has some good life in it.
Silverfast has a driver for it. Actually, driver is a weak discription. This thing comes with an inch thick written manual. You can even do selecive color replacement in the prescan. Calibation targets are an option with the package. All and all it's an excellent value.
