It is a sad day indeed when an elder of our industry passes away.
Our sympathies go to Mary Dellow and family, to the NSW Committee of the Sign Associaiton of Australia and it's members, who are today in mourning for Ted Haines.
Ted's enthusiasm for the world of signs and the genuine affection he had for sign people was self evident.
I had the great honor of meeting Ted on a number of occasions because of his love of this industry. The folk like me who attended the last 2 national letterhead meetings held in NSW, were honored to have his gentle influence as he spoke warmly to many at each event.
Ted suffered a heart attack, Saturday 13th 2003.
Paul Jordan has contacted Ted's partner Mary and has forwarded our kind thoughts and prayers.
Notices will be drafted for the sign publications in our country.
Services will be in Sydney on Thursday 18th at 11.30am and I know we will all be thinking of Ted then.

A sad loss. He was a great man. A gentleman. One of the VERY old school.
I was fortunate to talk with him on several times at Letterhead Meets in NSW. Ted would come along to watch (he was as blind as a bat)
The stories he told of the old days were unreal! Especially the old "walldog" tales. Just listening to them turned my hair grey!
Then there was the box of gold leaf he produced. Damn, that stuff was as old as dirt. Think he gave most of it away at the meet. He was that sorta man.

At the risk of sounding corny, 'ditto' to the above. Ted was the only personj I've met other than John Jordan (who's by now absorbing a yankee accent) who could identify some old gilding 'gunk' I'd inherited. (He worked out what it was by the smell of it!) It's always sad losing people of his calibre, and their stories and experiences. It's a shame he wasn't interviewed and tape-recorded beforehand. Best wishes to Mary and all who knew Ted.
