After upgreading to XP my scanner stopped functioning, I've been working on this for weeks trying everything to fix it to avoid spending another 500 bucks for a scanner, not only that but most scanners today appear to be geared more towards photos and not text and graphics.I did everything they told me to do to rectify this problem but to no avail.
I accepted the fact that my scanner was junk but still was apprehensive about buying a new one for the fact that I did not want to buy one to find out it did vector scanning horribly.
So I looked into the possibility of getting it repaired, I searched Google for HP scanjet 6300 repair only to find out I am one of many who had the same problem.
Being a known issue Hp is avoiding it like SARS and are offering a refurb for 300 bucks to me as the only alternative. Sorry HP you lost all creditabilty with me, your scanner line is junk as far as new and I will be slowly replacing all my HP equipment from here on.
Oh and I joined the many many users who filed a complaint with the silicon valley BBB,.
If you own one it is a matter of time till you get caught holding the bag as well. prepare for the fall it hurts.

Rob, I've talked with a few techs that swear HP won't write the necessary drivers for the equipment that was around prior to XP & 2000. I only have two HP devices & had to buy a third party driver for one of them.

Bob- I had the same problem when I had a new cpu built w/ Xp Pro. Couldn't install HP 5100 even after downloading the XP driver, tried 2 other HP's used in here- same thing . So I went shopping for a new scanner- screw HP.

Bob, here's a suggestion, I found a refurbished HP 2210, a 4 in one for $149 two weeks ago. I hear right now at Office Max it's going for $119 with a $30 mail in rebate, it has high resolution on the scanner, what I like about it is you can upload your digital card on it too! I give it a 10.

I have a 6300c and so far it is working on XP Pro, reinstalled XP Pro a number of times just to do house keeping and also reinstalled current drivers etc for 6300, now you've got me cautious about reinstalls, so will watch for problems. Although I bought mine from Office Depot for $150Cdn when they discontinued them, but at least bought the 3 yr extended warranty from Office Depot so I will have a bit of recourse.

I'm surprised it's taken this long for people to realize all of HP's products are junk... they've only been producing crap products the past 8 years!

The problem is, when HP made updates to their drivers for that scanner to work under XP, it burns out the USB port on the scanner itsself. The only workaround is a replacement scanner.

I was bored last night and actually read some of that thread about the scanner, and it looks like the people that complained enough (ie: called HP AND filed complaints with the BBB) were getting setup with replacement scanners. Although that thread is at least a year old, I don't know if they're still doing that.
I quit using HP stuff a long time ago.. I'd expect better quality and better output for the higher price they charge for their equipment, but the performance just isn't there. I have an old 693C Deskjet printer that I still need to set on fire.

I actually haggled for about an hour with HP yesterday and got no where, so I DID file a complaint and even though they might pony up a new scanner, they dont have anything I would want in terms of quality, as of right now I am the proud owner of a new epson, I need to get work done not wait for some corporate bull**** to be run through the mill. but thatnks for the update I read that as well.

HP made some good printers....when inkjets where 1st out. ill give them that much. as for anything else....never....and when they hooked up with COMPAQ that was the last shot!!! you want a scanner, go to the people who does them best..CANON, MICROTEK, MUSTEK...ask a XEROX copier tech what internals their products use.....and they been scanning for a lot longer then any others.

buy an HP computer and see what happens when you want to do ANYTHING with the peripherals, you need their proprietary software. I have an HP cd writer that I had to find HP software to run it, eventually we found a workaround to it, (there were 40 of these sitting in a pile, so a geek freind did the workaround) and I have a HP tape backup that we still cannot get to work, it seems there is something missing in the equasion???
My feeling on anything HP is that its JUNK anymore, even though Compaq is part of the game now. I never had much faith in them either.
As for me, its either build it myself as I have done since the first machine (a Tandy) or buy me a Dell. Gateway sux as much as the rest suck too.
Printers you cant go wrong with an Epson, or a Canon. hell I might even stretch it and get another Brother before I waste my cash on an HP product.
