Today I came up with a concept that may just save you a heap of time and at the same time keep you up to speed with your normal work load. Delemer: It’s almost time to knock off for the day and a client comes in and needs a design/layout done for their new business, car whatever. You have prior commitments for the night or would just rather spend the quality time with your family that night but don’t want to loose this potential client or an existing good client of yours. Answer: get someone else to do it for you! Yeah right! I hear you say. Who would work back late at a minutes notice? Time zone is the answer. While you guys are shutting your doors for the day, we here in Australia are opening ours for the day. The added bonus is we are a day in front of you as well. Just think of the possibilities! So while you are having a nice candle lit dinner with you special friend I could be saving the day for you back in the shop. J
It would be simple, just E.mail me the requirements and run down if there are special needs and by the time you get to work the next day there would be a kewl logo, layout etc just waiting in your inbox. It could also be sent as a cuttable format as well just download and cut away. Your new client will be thrilled you worked your butt off all night for him I’m sure there would be a huge tip for being so prompt J yeah right!
Punchline: of course like you I don’t work for free but we would work out a pre-arranged agreement that both parties are happy with.

sounds good to me! I'll contact you the first time it comes up... email me and we'll discuss pricing...
So am I an "Off-shore Specialist" now?

Very enterprising- that's what Aussies are known for! Good idea Rod.
P.S. Could you design a 5 inch circle in a hurry for Joey? He needed it yesterday, (which is tomorrow on this side of the date line). He didn't mention candle-lit dinners though

Wouldnt there be implications with Importing and Exporting? I mean wouldnt we have to get Customs involved in the process? Can you imagine the taxes on that?
Actually I see a great concept here between both sides of the globe. This could work both ways.
All it takes is trust, freindship creativity and MONEY.
On another note, how would I ever be able to airbrush one of those things that Rod does, I dont have his skills, I only wish I did.
But I like the concept and would consider using it if I had the need to.

Rod, You have a great idea, except I think your best sales direction would be not to the busybees, (because most will still insist on their own designs). Rather to those folks that have entered this business with little or no design skills and realize it. They could improve their businesses much more, by allowing you to help them create their designs, and use their technical skills to carry on. You have great design skills so good luck on this venture.

Has this post gone south yet? For those of you who don't know that Rod Tickle is a great designer take my word for it, Rod's work is awesome. Since a good percentage of signage and vehicle art in this country is copied from those in magazines and Ozzie work could add a certain twist to an already good idea, I think this is a great opportunity to those who haven't a clue or are just stumped on what to do. Sure Oz is far away but theres so many excellent designers that are only an email away. I think the main problem would be collection of the designers fee because of this tremendous distance bebween the two. But then again, isn't this what Letterheads are all about, helping one another

I've been doing exactly the same thing for about a year now. 99% of the time it works out great...every once in awhile you'll run across a deadbeat, but all you can really do in that case is write it off and don't do work for that person again.
Alot of the work I've gotten is vectorizing artwork for plotter or edge ready, logos and a few vehicle layouts. I've been responsible for a few people spending more time with their loved ones, and probably have caused one or two to add to their families.

Monte ... money exchange can be a problem as you and I have found out. The banks want a large slice of any action ... $15 here to clear a USA Check! % if I try to cash greenbacks!!!! Credit card transactions also attract fees So it looks like saving all the cash up and coming over for another Letterhead meet ... Fred's 2004?

Well thanx for all your responces. I did think this was a good Idea but just wanted to bounce it off of you guys to see what you thought. I know of other professions here in Australia doing this for large American companies and hospitals and the reason it works is the americans dont have to pay overtime to there employees to work back when for half the price a aussie can do it during our day/your night. The other reason is I have the skills and experience to help some of you who have little or no design experience that have found your way into the crazy world of Signs. Dave: yep you could advertise-"international sign guy" Ian: thanks, & sorry I'm not going to Cairns. Also I told joey I only had metric circles. Monte: Hi mate, yeah thought of that. You'd pay in american dollars but it would be a price we both agree on. Our exchange rate sucks, but if you pay a reasonable competitive price for my work, by the time it gets converted to aussie dollars I should get what I normally charge down here for design work so hopefully its a win win. the benifits are the time differance and hopefully me experience to help someone else out. Harris: Nice to see ya again mate. Lets just leave ol uncle sam out of this huh! remember if ya get anything too tricky I'm only a air fare away hehehe Jack: You hit the nail on the head. I was also targetting those with little or no design experience but wanted to also let others know I was here to help out if needed as I know what its like when work is out of control. Evan a little help can be a BIG help at times for evan the best out there. I know many of the guys here do AWESOME stuff and many are my heros in the trade, but I'm not out to take there work just add a service tothose that may feel I have something to offer. Joey: thanx for your kind words. As far as getting payed I think if I give my bank details and they pay electronically like many of my clients here do would be the easiest less messy way of going about it. Don:hey mate how ya going. Thats good to know your doing well from this, lets hope I can do the same across the pond. Jon: g'day, sorry I wont be at Cairns. I'll be thinking of yaz, please say Hi to all. Yep "signs from the future" I see a new business name coming on. hehehe
Thanx again, guess What I need now is to get a feel on what you think is a fair price for a design.
step up to the plate!
cheers! Rod

(why is the ot guy not smiling?) well that's not my question though, my wife & I went garage saleing today & we bought some clothes from some pro windsurfers that travel down under on the circuit... anyway, found $10 Australian in a pocket. Linda was curious how stoked to be. I figured about $5 worth of stoke, but this post got me thinking I could find out.

I tell no lies! I was just writing to David Drane about doing design work, etc. this morning. I had not opened this post since I thought I would get to it later. This is so weird that I was asking him what type of work he was interested in, including design, and noting that to have a different flair to design from other countries is fun, opening up a whole new spectrum of ingenuity. This was most apparent when I had Brian from Belfast come to stay as a house guest a couple weeks ago. His designs are awesome and different than what I am used to looking at here in the U.S. He uses all hand tools and never a computer. But, to have those designs reproduced over and over again is what Jay Allen and I were discussing with Brian. I admire Brian's individuality and strong will of reasoning, his originality and gifts once passed on from his father and grandfather, both signwriters. I am a newbie with the computer files and design myself too and thus a bit lagging behind in technology. But for me it is better to get on the stick and learn that too. Rod, you have a great idea! And, to think it can be all done while we're asleep! How ingenious, what a twist of a presentation!
