I am drawing attention to the new meet that was just listed. I didn't know anything about it until I got a call from Will Bill's (Betz) son, Kevin. He called to ask for my help because he is the one hosting the meet. He is doing it in on a grand scale. The meet will me at Cobo Hall, Detroit. He said the city is for this meet and sounds like they will be willing to help to some degree. I'll know more in Oct. when I meet with him and his group.

Jill, My husband and I are currently working with a team of other people to put on a 2004 National Convention here in Michigan for our Flying Club with a memeber list of 3000+. It will be in June so I will have some current experience to fall back on when it comes to working on large events.
Here is a lists of things that might need to have coordinators. I have never been to a International meet so is there anything that I might be overlooking.
Design / Graphics coordinator Displays/theme coordinator Transportation/golf carts? Accommadations/Housing Food Projects Coordinator Advertising & Publicity Vendors Registration Donations Awards or prizes Communications Information Center coordinator Entertainment
Am I overdoing it with ideas or suggestions?

I'm not so sure about this one. If you have ever met Kevin you no doubt understand that he is always talking on a grand scale. You have to admire people for having vision, though.
I don't believe that the Letterheads can number enough to pay for renting out any parts of Cobo Hall. That's a pretty good sized arena (2.4 million sq. ft. altogether - the smallest exhibit hall is 100,000 sq. ft.) and that means big bucks. (there are smaller meeting rooms) But that means high registration cost which means lots of complaints about meet cost - which in turn drives down attendance. Maybe Kevin should set his sights a little lower - or maybe he's already handled all this with the city. If so, I apologize for my doubts. But I do still have my doubts.
Prove me wrong, please.

Hey (& Hi) Jay, You can't blame the guy for trying. Everybody said I couldn't do Mars and I did. I heard that alotta folks dissed the meet prior to it because "she's just a girl". But I think most of the folks who attended it had a blast. Sal, I heard it's the 19th of August. But I'm not bringing Justis! So let's give Kevin a chance. Planning a meet is the hardest thing I've ever done. Anyone who's hosted an International knows it's a tuff task. All good intentions aside, it's like trying to juggle a bowling ball, an egg, and a chainsaw. Love- JILL

I met Kevin at the Banff meet - he's definitely far from normal. (but most people here probably fall into that category) Whether you call it "vision" or just big brass ones, go for it Kevin. I'm sure it'll be a different kind of meet.

I second jay's thoughts even if the city will wave the fees. the biggest problem will be the union scale wages every dealer or exhibitor will have to pay for tables, or displays in the hall. Thats the main reason the sign biz show only was here once the dealers were bleeding from the costs. you have to have a union eletrician plug or unplug cords. Walldogs was amazing. in that the town and county pulled together. As somebody who has worked in Detroit for 31 years. Even big events with 100,00o people attending and paying money. end up folding because of the costs. they almost cancelled the gold cup races on the river this year due to a lack of funds. Also coporate (large)sponorship has quickly become a thing of the past. Auto compaines and others here are dumping people as fast as they can and moving jobs out of the country. I had heard at the pinhead meet Last Jan that its was going to be in or around Mount Clemens area. The other thing is all fees and costs have to be paid up front after the women who ran a music fest stiffed a lot of people and they had a court fight to get the rights to the name back ect. when the info is out there and dates are set I will be in line to sign up.

Noel Webber's meet in Boise a few years ago was at a convention center. It was a very successful meet as far as I could tell. I believe it can be done.
