Congratulations once again to Bill Gates and all the folks at Microsoft for proving once again that the security of the Windows OS is as leaky as a screen door in a submarine made of sponge.
Mr. Gates, if my signage were as "reliable" as your security, I'd be collecting unemployment. Impresseive that you have made so much money with so little concern for the end users.
(sorry all, but after all these years, I just had to vent) Rapid

Thanks for the heads up Ray. Flaws in microsoft security can quickly go beyond 'annoyance' level if they are exploited by a worm or a virus, blaster is a good example; and it has become important to install the correct patches for these flaws in a timely fashion. Patches are available (free) directly from microsoft. I would not recommend taking security patches from any other source. Here's a good starting point microsoft security Click on "Let Microsoft Windows® Update scan your computer and recommend updates to download and install " Once your computer has been scanned for updates, you will be presented with a list of available updates, this is likely to be lengthy; if you do not want to install all the updates, you can remove the unwanted ones; you should, however, install all the updates that are labeled critical .
Happy 'puting

I agree you need to update your system for security reasons. I just have one warning.
Besides security patch's Beware of what updates you download and install!!!
A couple of weeks ago I went to MS to update, as I was a lot during that time to make sure I did not get the worm.
Anyway, it said all I needed was a video card update. My thinking was that would be great, WRONG!!!!
After a week of no computer because when I would turn on the computer the monitor would automaticly go into hybernation mode.
Finally I got the correct number to get a hold of MS and after they set me up and a 52 min. hold time a tech got me up and running in about 10 mins.
I did not realize that in safe mode the system dos not load the video drivers, otherwise I could have fixed it myself. Once in we just "rolled" the driver back to previous version.
The tech told me not to download driver updates such as these from MS. When I asked why he informed me that they get them directly from the manufacturer. That would all be well and fine except I have a Gateway system and with many builders (like dell also) they may change settings on a card to work better with the settings on their system. So, he tells me to get the drivers from who ever built the system.
My policy now....
It WORKS...Dammit!!!!

OK, let's get interesting here. You talk about a monopoly with regard to Microsoft, how about the snotty attitude from Apple?? I have always recieved a take it or leave it attitude from their retail centers. I want a Mac for some of our layout work, but have been unable to get near the response I get from Dell. I would think they should work equally hard for my business. I was never really happy with how Mac ingored the sign industry for so long. Now, when they realize that these sign people spend money and have become very computer literate, they want some of the action.
Microsoft is EONS ahead of them when it comes to customer service. Sure, it's not perfect, but if we have a better way, let's desgn it, build it, market it, sell it, service it, research it and upgrade it better than Microsoft has. Need I remind you of the 3.0 days in the sign industry?
I am not a Gates fan either, but it sure beats hand cutting vinyl, if you've ever done that, know what I mean.

I wouldn't blame Apple for the lack of sign people using Mac's but more the software companies. Dell works so hard because there are so many other PC peddler's out there competing for thier business they kind of have to. I don't see a whole lot of people building Mac clones in order to compete for the general populations business.

I'm sorry to hear of your inconsiderate Mac store. My local one has always been excellent. I've bought 4 systems from them over the years. They offer tiered pricing depending on the amount of hand holding a customer might need. For "out the door" customers they match the discount catalog pricing pretty much.
The two times I've actually needed service they turn it around quickly knowing that my business runs on that cpu.
Maybe it's because of the large proffessional market they have in this town. A pile of ad agencies, many print shops and a few screenshops all running Macs.
If your really interested you might ask around to see if there are any Mac User Groups meeting locally. They're a fount of helpful information and generally very friendly.
With all the Worm crap happening out there and the new G5's shipping, Mac's are looking better every day.
