We've seen a bunch of new people joining the fun at Letterville Chat the last few days. Barb and I are determined to work with all of you to make our chat as simple as possible. We've learned a couple things that may help.
I'll often invite people reading the BB to chat. They see a box that pops up on their screen that reads. "You are invited to Letterville Chat. Click on the green button." Or something to that effect.
If and when they choose to click on that green button, they are suppossed to be taken directly to the Letterville Chat screen. I'll show you what that looks like in a second.
Sometimes we will welcome them, but get no responce. That makes me wonder if the new user is confused about where to type. The place to type your message is the yellow box underneath the large blue screen. Type your message there and hit the enter key. Here's a photo that should explain things better.
I've had a few users report that they get an "Unable To Connect To Server" message after clicking on the green chat button. IRC chat uses different doors called ports to allow you to join a chat room. The default is 6667, but anything between 6661 and 6669 will usually work.
If one port is full or not working, click on the Config button located near the bottom right of the chat app and edit the port number. Hit OK and see if that solves your problem.
Don't hesitate to tell us, in detail, what sort of problems you are having. We'll do whatever we can to fix things, but we need to know exactly what is happening and/or what you are seeing. The problem with computers is that we all have different setups and tons of options to play with.
Screen resolution is one of these variables. My laptop is set at a resolution of 1024 x 768 pixels using 32 bit color. It looks great at this end, but many of you may be running a 800 x 600 resolution. I may have to reduce the chat app width more to better suit your needs.
Once we get you used to using chat, our experienced users will teach you all about a more full featured chat program called mIRC. Most mIRC veterans will probally prefer to continue using the program they are used to. Nothing wrong with that!
We're also interested to hear your ideas on how to better use our chat tool. Special nights for focused topics come to mind. Chatting with a guest Merchant may be of interest. Those Heads in other countries may desire to setup a special chat time that better suits their time zone. A weekly Chat Party might be fun. Maybe we can even attract some of our old users back? Lots of possibilities. All it requires is a desire to make it happen. Let's do it!

I've not had any problems before, till tonight when I received the im from you and bushie, but I couldn't get on- it wanted the "join #channel" bit added- and listed no one there, and wouldn't accept anything I typed.
It said it's an unmanaged channel, and needs a nickname, but no name was good enough- my real name nor any nickname.
PS was there a residents' draw for the end of August/start of Sept.? I must have missed it.

Steve.... the yellow box is a bit confusing. Maybe a larger blinking cursor might help.

Could you place the green button on the letterhead/ pinhead forum page besides the im or somewhere in that area? I'm sure most people are in that area 90% of the time.

I'm still having trouble with the chat site seizing up on me...sometimes after I type a message it won't go into the main chat area and it seizes there...the only way to clear it is to hit control/alt delete...gets old after 2 or 3 times so I give up.

As you know I tried it last night. Worked fine. We discussd the screen resolution thing as, yea, it was a bit big at 800x600. I recently bought a bigger monitor and some things are kinda overpowering on it. The list of people on it was partially hidden too. I've since changed my reolution. The only other thing was the green color of the nicks against the blue background was hard to follow when chat was moving along fast. Other than that it works really well. Seems to be a lot more user friendly than mirc, which always requires me to do a "hey , how do you do?" question and then I never seem to figure it out anyway.
changing resolution also means no more side scrolling on the bb. I don't chat a lot , but the past few times I've been there it's been pretty lively.

Ian...Not sure what your problem was but I'm going to take a stab in the dark. The Webchat network requires that a user has a registered nick to enter an empty chat channel like #letterville. That's Furby's job! Over the last couple days, the little bugger has gone missing a few times. You may have tried to enter the channel at one of these times.
John...I can't find anyway to do anything about the blinking curser. Some have to click on the yellow text bar just to see it blink. This box was originally white, so I changed it to yellow. What's more visible than yellow?
Fergie...That is possible, but not a job for me. It involves adding a link inside the actual BB code. I'll have Barb contact Greg the programmer.
Monte...I don't know where to start with your problem. My best guess is that it has something to do with your java settings. You gotta find some computer whiz kid to help you with this stuff. I wish I could be of more help. Maybe someone else has an idea.
Ian had a question about this month's Resident Draw. In a nutshell, we screwed up. There was a pile of family health issues happening and the first of the Month slipped by on us. We WILL make it up. Stay tuned.

I've added a chat button, along with the HeadTV button, in an area that is far more visible. I know some are still having problems connecting, but every new person that gets to chat is a small victory. Mike Meyer made it today. I think I spotted Bill Reidell in the chat list at one point. We won't quit until everyone is successful.
