It's me again. I was wondering what is being used currently on canvas awnings. Should I use a waterbased primer then one shot to letter? I forgot if it would show a gloss, also, if I do. It's been twenty two years too long since I painted awnings like this in the south. Is there something else I need to do if it is colder weather? There is probably a post, but I wanted up to date info, thanks.

Do you mean cotton canvas or acryllic canvas? Acryllic is the most common now, under the trade name "Sunbrella" (and others).
I know some "snappers" in town who just go at it with 1-shot -- it takes two or three coats and the manufacturer swears against it, but they do it, and it looks fine.
I've used Deca and Ronan Aqua Cote (water based enamels). I've also used exterior latex house paint (for background colors). the local awning shops mostly use white house paint. I expect the new Rhino water based paints would be excellent for this, but I haven't had a chance to try them yet.

Thank you for your time! Yes, it is regular cotton canvas and wish it were sunbrella. Do I use house paint on the awning? Is that the best solution? I am impressed with the way some muralists use house paint! Just watching Dan Sawatasky in Sterling, Illinois was really informative. And, the trip to the paint store was good since they had it somewhat organized to get more paint just up into the next town. After using house paint there, I bet I can work the edges with a bristle brush. It's been a while, but I used to prime with latex primer and follow with one shot on the cloth banners. I'll try anything that works now.

I do a lot of work on these kinds of fabrics and I use the FabTac stencil material which you will find by clicking on the link below. The link in the other posting above mentions Larry who is the man when it comes to this stuff! . I have spoken to him many times on the phone as he ships to me every so often. He recommends using a semi-sheen latex undercoat and a gloss latex topcoat. But his site will tell all. FabTac Site
