I have a customer needing a copy to put above a logo carving reading "Welcome to" This is for the entrance of a dental clinic indoors. Also the same material to go into the center of the carving saying ADVANCED DENTAL CARE. Both copies to 1/8 to 3/8 inch thick, 2.5 to 3.5 inches in height, and 2 to 3.5 feet long. I will probably paint both with auto paints. Where can I get the copy cut to style, or can I buy the materials and cut it on a jiggy saw. This is going to require precision of close up viewing. Thanks, New Question, How does silver leaf differ from gold? I would imagine their is not a lot of difference, a a jeweler friend of mine said that pure silver should not tarnish without clears, the same as gold.. I don't recall seeing any done anywhere so I'm kind of in the dark on this one. Thanks for any responses, Bronzeo

You can either cut acrylic, or sintra on a band saw or scroll saw yourself or send it out to one of many places with a router like Gemini. On the silver leaf... most "silver leaf" is actually aluminum which needs to be cleared. I am not sure about a real silver leaf but I am sure there are some experts on the matter here.........

For the finish, try some white gold...I think its 12K.Looks just like silver.Acts like gold

For silver leaf effects on surface gilding it is wise to always use aluminum leaf or palladium. Pure silver leaf will tarnish just like silver flatware etc. and 12k white gold will also tarnish. In fact, even with a clear coat, which will often accelerate the tarnish, most karats of gold leaf will tarnish or darken as well. Only 23k and up to 24k, platinum and palladim will not tarnish. The other karats of gold are alloyed with silver and copper, both of which will darken or tarnish from airbourne paticualtes. Most clears on the market contain sulfur contaminates from the solvents used in their manufacture which will instantly turn silver and copper. Aluminum should also be clearcoated as it will gray out over time and all other metal leaves will tarnish. Please refer to my textbook for additional information and suggestions.

If the logo is dimensional and "traditional" looking ie. wood carved, you might consider shaping the banner out of wood or HDU and sandblasting the verbiage into the banner. It can create a nice effect without vast knowledge in carving or a lot of equipment. We also have full capability to cut dimensional work if you need it!

as for the gold leaf...I am still learning...LOL

We would make a banner as Robert suggested and use our laser to cut the letters out of 3/16" cherry or 1/4" acrylic (as thick as our 25 watter will go although we could stack them) from any font from coreldraw and glue them to the banner or just do the letters and attach them individually to the top of the sign. If you have an awards shop around with a laser and a guy who likes to do more than crank out trophies, it should be no problem. Otherwise, I can help you out.

Thanks for the very helpful info. I'm glad their are people on the board here that will do a few custom items, whereas I can't justify the equiptment. One question here, Would an acrylic cut piece of about 3/16 have a polished edge, and if it doesn't, is the edge good enough to look very good painted with a gun, or would it have a lot of filing envolved. I know you can flash burn plexi edge, but this would be Scriptlike fontage of about 3 inches or so. Thanks, and thanks again for the great help, Bronzeo
