I am going to re-format tonight and my computer software automatically puts in a C: and D: drive. I hate partitions but don't know how to delete the second.

Before you eliminate d:, check the size of each drive. If after process drive c: equals the sum of what both drives were, then you're okay. If c: remains the same size, then partitioning was necessary whether you liked it or not. Older operating system software had hd size limitations. Since I don't know specifics of your system that's only a guess. Hope that made sense. What size is your hd and what operating system do you have?

Ah, that does make a difference.

What brand of HD are you using? I know that if you are using Maxtor, you can go to www.maxtor.com and download the latest version of Maxblast. It can do the partition for you very easily.

I would think that the other HD manufacturers have something similar.

-----

Meanwhile....

1. Boot from the XP installation CDROM. Make sure you have the option in your BIOS to boot from CDROM.

2. During in the installation process, you will be prompted to select a partition to install XP. If you have a brand new hard disk that hasn't been partitioned, you can press "C" to create a partition.

3. Make the OS partition as big as you want.

4. After Windows XP has been installed, you can create more partitions by right clicking on "My Computer" and then selecting "manage" and then clicking on "Disk Management".

5. Right click on the non-allocated space and you will see the option to create a partition.

I hope this helps.

I re-formated using the CD's that came with my laptop. The only thng that I did was load Norton and go in and get the lastest updates. It immediately picked up the w32.welchia. worm. I debated whether I should have fdisk ed or use the CD's. I guess that I will have to fdisk tonight and start all over again. Now I just have to find someone with XP that has a clean system and can make me a startup disk as there might be something so deeply hidden that even fdisking may not remove it. I AM SO SICK OF VIRUSES AND THE PEOPLE THAT WRITE THEM.

usually no need to worry about a virus transfering to a start up disk. The newest virii are email based or soem other worm type stuff and do not use system files like the old virii did.

Go ahead and make your startup disk, then scan it for virii and you should be just fine..

I Laura, sorry that you don"t like partitions, but it's look that's not the first time i saw you in virus troubles ..I réally like to have more than one partition and minimise my c: to keep my files in a safe place because virus prefer attack c: ..Anyway..for your problem ,,first make a boot disk, second ,try to find a del part disk,it's efficient. Use del part boot disk to clean all the hard drive, after that fdisk (use maximun size for a c: partition) and your suppose to have a brand new one 12gbtes hard drive waiting for you...but i'm still going with the idéa of 2 partitions ,,a small c: a big D: and even it's xp ,i'M always northon ghost my c: on it for a faster recovery and a better recovery than xp ...good lock!!!!!

Hi Laura,
You say you did a format and reload, and that your drive has two partitions.
You go on to say that you reloaded XP and Norton and that Norton picked up Welchia.
Did Norton pick uop welchia on drive d:?
By rights after a format there should be no data remaining on the formatted partition, this includes viruses.
In relation to getting rid of the second partition, you have the option (in all XP installations I have done) of using the existing partition to install to or removing the partition and any others along with it and specifying/creating a new partition.
You may find that regardless of what you request, there is still a small partition showing alongside the primary partition - perhaps 7mb or thereabouts, this is likely a peculiarity of your notebook.

Regardless, W32Welchia is not a particularly malicious virus and is easily contained and removed. It supposedly tries to contact the MS website and download the MSBlaster patch. At worst it might tie up your dialup until you download the fix and get rid of it.
HTH,
David

Thanks for all the replies. It seems that doing the Cd's that came with my sony, didn't do a deep format. Keep in mind that the only thing tha tI have loaded on it so far is Norton. Last night while on the internet, I started typing a URL and it automatically filled in the rest. Ummm!

I made a startup disk, rebooted with it in and got to c: and tried fdisk. Nothing. I spent much time last night researching and it seems that XP has its own way of working on partitions and fdisking. What I found was that I needed to go into a disk management program through RUN. and I could delete the partition there. I did delete D: but the allocated space is there-just with no drive letter. Back to square one.

ps. I found a really neat bulletin board for computer problems. www.annoyances.org
