Hi There, I am just trying to learn photoshop and I am having a problem with sizing. When I try to size the image it just changing the size of the background. For example if I need a oval thats 6" x 2" how do I select just the oval and change its size. Any help would be appreciated. You can e-mail me at stacy4@megalink.net Thank you, Stacy

plenty I don't know here, but when you select the oval, go to edit, then transform, then scale. This will allow you to resize visually with the handles that pop upon the corners, but it also should create little boxes on the top of the screen where you can enter percentages, or actual dimensions.

I can take your question 2 different ways depending on whether or not the oval to be selected already exists in your image or if it to be created.
If it already exists, then your first job is to get it onto its own layer. Once it has this distinction then it will be selectable by holding down the control key and clicking on the layer name in the Layers palette. It can then be resized using the Transform command as Doug mentioned. At this point you would do it visually or you can achieve pretty good accuracy by setting some guidelines that would border the dimension you want to resize to.
If the oval is to be created, then select the Elliptical Marquee tool and set the Style to "Fixed Size" and fill in your dimensions. Click on the screen and you will have the oval selection. At this point you can position it and add whatever fill or stroke you want. If you want to be able to select it again on its own, make sure you create a new layer before you do anything in the way of filling the oval or working with it.
